Here are a few things to try. If you have access to a secondary PC or laptop,
try connecting your drive to it using a different USB cable. Also try unplugging
your drive from the power outlet for a few seconds and then connecting it again------------------------------------------
Another easy way is to see if the system is seeing a new device but may not
    be warning you
, is to go into the My Computer (right click)> System
Properties> Hardware (tab)> Device Manager, and see of you are showing any
yellow question marks. These yellow marks are for unknown attached devices
Windows does not know what it is, and can not install because it has no driver
in it's data base to recognize it.
If the hard drive is plugged in, do a
re-start of the computer, navigate to the above mention Device Manager and see.
If it still does not show any new devices. Plug and Play has been disabled. If
not in the System Bio's, then possibly in the Administrator's System Services
File.----------------------- the problem is being caused by the Logical Disk Manager Administrative service
and possibly the logical Disk Manager service not being started or the services
might be disabled. to solve the problem, click on the "Start" menu, click the
"Run" command, and type in: services.msc , scroll down until you see both these
services. right click on each of the services about and select properties, on
the general tab, change the startup type to "automatic" and click the start
button under the service status. do this for both of the services, and it will
fix ur problem----------------------------------------------------Right click on My Computer.Choose Manage (This will open the Computer
    Management window).
Go to the Storage category and select Disk
    Management
Right click the new drive (usually listed as Hard Disk 1) and
    "initialize"
You now have the option to partition and format the
    drive.
The default settings of Primary Partition and NTFS- Quick Format are
    recommended for most users.
    Enjoy your new drive

How do i erase files from hard drive?

In order to erase the files off of a hard drive, there are multiple approaches towards accomplishing your goal.
There are different types of erases, the most basic (format) is what just writes a file to the hard drive allowing all the files on it to be overwritten. The files will still be able to be recovered through this process. To prevent this there are other types of formats which write zeros to the data...this process usually takes a considerably lengthy amount of time depending on the size of you hard drive.
To go about these ways, one way is that you can remove the hard drive and place it inside an external enclosure..then plugging the external enclosure into another computer and running a software to format the external drive. Another way is using a windows recovery cd, and reinstalling windows on the hard drive by deleting the partition and making a raw partition and installing windows onto it.
Hope this helps.

Hi Maltomeal

it seems you know your way around notebooks.
My first suggestion is to take the new hard drive out, and put the old one into the new computer to see if it will at least boot up.

Since I don't know the operating system or the type of format that was on your old hard drive, it is possible that the current operating system you are using will not recognize the old one.

If the hard drive boots up, and it may not recognize some of the drivers because its a different computer configuration, you should still be able to backup to a thumb drive.

If the hard drive does not boot up, then your hard drive has lost its information. You might need to take the hard drive to a data recovery company like ontrack.

thanks adi

Hello and thank you for using Fixya's services.

This problem happens quite a bit with Windows Vista. It seems that Windows Vista puts a hidden file in the backup; which locks the device.

Open the external device (Windows 7 is fine). Click on "view hidden folders and files." Delete any hidden files you may have in the external.

Go back to "my computer" and right click on the external hard drive letter. Choose properties and security tab. Make your user-name as a main user (administrator) and disable the read only.

Reboot the computer and see if this works.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Usb not recognized in HP Designjet 500 Plus printer. I checked it defferent computer and use defferent USB Cable Sk. Abdus Sabur

One or more of the hints below will probably sort out most USB problems with most USB portable / external hard drives and OTHER devices (though not always)

A few things to check but assumes USB and Windows for other interfaces / operating systems (mac/ Linux) similar steps may be adapted to suit.

1. Ensure it is connected directly to the computer to a USB 2.0 port not a USB 1.0 port as this can have effects on performance and reliability

2. Use only the cables that came with it NOT one that fits that may have been lying around or is longer. Not all USB cables are equal even though they should be)

3. Do not connect through an external USB HUB unless that hub is USB 2.0 AND has its own power supply.

4. Use ONLY the power supply that came with it if it has an external power supply Don’t use any other unless you know it has both the same voltage and current rating e.g. 12V 500mA anything rated below that would not work properly.

5. Always use the same port for connecting your devices. Some devices do not like being switched about. If switched they may want to install software / drivers again. This can be especially true if you move a HUB to another port

6. For FLASH DRIVES you should ensure that the device is set for "quick removal" using the drive control panel properties or use the USB "Safely Remove Hardware" option. If you dont do this there is a very strong chance that any files you transfer may not be there when you plug into another computer.
7. It is possible to remove drives from the enclosures in most cases and connect directly inside a PC to fully check it.
You should also do this to cheack the drives connections are not bad inside the enclosure.
8. If none of the above steps help look at updating the drivers from the manufacturers web site in the support section.

9. If you checked and fixed anything there and still have issues then check your hardware from CONTROL PANEL / SYSTEM / HARDWARE.
Any exclamation marks by hardware need fixing before you investigate any further
SPECIAL NOTES
USB flash drives can fail for no apparent reason.
Sandisk Cruzers are especially bad for this.

USB hard drives should be treated with extreme care.
This is a real hard drive ! and knocks and bumps can quite literally kill them.

Note that if you hear a drive clicking or pinging this could be the worst thing you would hear.

turn on the sound
plug usb cable
do you hear the sound? windows recognizing some hardware plugged!?
ok, nevermind the sound...
check Device Management, does HP printer show up?!
next...
Install HP software with the USB cable UNPLUGGED, plug it only when the software says so.
Check Printers again, it should be there.

External hard drive problem

The problem is that the printer, being a composite device, takes a lot of energy from the computer USB ports. Some computers, such as some Dell computers, have problems with USB ports due to a cheap manufacturing. What I can suggest you is to simply unplug the printer when you want to use the HDD, because no matter what you do, you'll have the same problem and that's because of the computer that won't supply enough power to the USB ports.
Also, if you are using a laptop, remember to keep it plugged to the power so it can provide more energy to the USB ports.

The hard drive does need to be replaced and must be done by an authorized Canon service tech (like me) who has access to the system software. The system software ( or firmware) is installed on the new hard drive using Canon's Service Support Tool. Check here to find your local authorized Canon dealer.
