Question about Western Digital Protege WD400EB 40 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

Drive appears to have fouled computer

I have a Dell Dimension 2400 that has a WD400EB 40Gb hard drive. When I turned the computer on, the keyboard lights flashed but nothing else. No POST, no "Hit F1 to continue" - no video at all. The drive does not sound like it is running.
I tried a different sound card, unplugged everything except the drive, still nothing. I put the drive in another computer that was running fine - it did not boot. When I took the drive out, it still will not boot now.
Is there some obscure thing that a malfunctioning drive can do to a computer to render it useless?
Thanks in advance!

Dave

"Is there some obscure thing that a malfunctioning drive can do to a computer to render it useless?" Yes it can, however if you take out the HD and put in 1 you KNOW that worked fine and pc is still "useless" then i have no clue. Probably one of those things i just came across (especially with certain types of certain HD's): 1 out of every so many get out of the box broken. Useless. If you broke any seal your warranty is probably gone too, however try to claim your warranty annyhow and in any way, should this be the case (test with a healthy drive). Wine a lot and they might understand you case and send you a new one annyways, free with maybe only shipping cost (say you want to cover those if they don't want to do it initially). If you had the HD longer (not a fresh installation) it's probably fataly damaged, you can try repairing but it probably won't do any good.

Hardrive is unknown device in bios

The BIOS determines the maximum size hard disk the computer can support.
The max hard disk size for this model Dell is 80Gb.
To use your 250Gb hard drive, install this Hard drive into an USB hard drive case and use it as an external USB hard drive.

I want to know can I clone the hard drive via usb. thank you

Hello! All you need to do is have both hard drives plugged in, and open the windows where you are transferring the data from and the data two, highlight all of the files on one hard drive, and drag and drop it into the new hard drive.
Good luck!

Strapping or Jumpering for slave

You need the system info for the laptop you are using to see if a 2nd hdd needs to be set as slave or set in the cable select mode. Either right above the jumper pins or on the top of the hdd above the pins you should see 3 groups of 2 pins. They will be marked, ma, cs, & sl. They may not be in this order as each hdd manufacturer is different but all will have those 3 markings. If you set as slave cover the 2 jumper pins marked sl. For cable select cover the 2 pins marked cs. Hope this helps & please remember to rate my answer.
