Don't do it. You will more than likely get dust on the sensor and then you've got a MUCH bigger problem. Take it to have it removed at a camera shop. Then while you're their get a USB card reader for your memory card. It's so much faster and you'll wish you'd got one long ago.

Try NOT connecting your camera to your computer.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program such as Picasa.

USB broken on Canon 40D...

If the camera is still under warranty, make sure you send it to be fixed before the warranty runs out. When they fix this problem they will also clean and service your camera, so it's a good idea to get it fixed (under warranty). But there's no reason to worry about this affecting any other operation in your camera. I never use the cable to transfer photos - I always take the memory card out of the camera and transfer using a card reader.

Sometimes you need to have the driver files for the particular camera. The 40D does require this and I experienced the same issue. You may be able to download the files at the Canon website. Try this link:
