Question about Freezers

Kenmore Freezer chest type 14.8 cubic feet

My freezer works fine for a while then it seems to not be keeping the food frozen. This has happened to me twice now. The meat was frozen, and even a water bottle, but the bread items and our ice cream was starting to get soft. We had to put everything into our refrigerator freezer. I don't trust the freezer now, as I am concerned about losing my food. After removing the food and closing the freezer, it started getting really cold again. I put a thermometer in the freezer when I notice the food getting soft, and it was 38 in the basket, 40 in the bottom. Later I remembered I left the thermometer in the freezer and it was reading below freezing. What's up with this freezer? Do I dump it and get another one? It's only 7 years old.

Thanks for the hint. In looking at the manual that comes with my freezer, it appears that there is not a fan on my model. Don't know why. It's a model number 253.11531100

We looked both behind and underneath the freezer, no condenser coils are visible. They must be inside the unit walls.

My fault it is just a freezer. I was thinking a refrigerator. Can you look at the condenser coils they might be under the unit or on the back. Some units have them underneath and are very hard to clean. So look at the coils under the unit and see if there is a lot of dust bunny's on them. Get back with me and let me know.+

When you open the freezer compartment do you hear a fan blowing? If no the take off the back cover and replace the fan. The compressor has to be on at the same time for the fan to work. If you know what I mean. let me know what happened. thanks.

QWhy won't magic chef 6 cubic chest freeze freeze anything after I defrosted it?

Try plugging something else in the outlet. A lamp would work to make sure you did not trip a circut breaker when you plugged back in after defrost.

My wife and I bought a Kenmore chest freezer (14.8 cubic foot) about 6 weeks ago. It is made by Frigidaire for Sears, and the model number is #253.165.42105, serial # WB94341279. It has been working OK. ...

This is well with in factory specifications. Hot air rises and cold air drops. Because a chest freezer does not have a fan to circulate the air it is normal for the basket to be warmer than the bottom of the freezer. The bottom of the freezer is used for food you want to keep for a longer period of time. What you store in the basket is food you will freeze for a short period of time. Ice cream should not be kept in the basket. As you fill your freezer with food you will find that the temperature will equal out because the frozen food will take up the place of the frozen air which will give you a more stable freezer temperature.
Try your test when you have it full of food.

Gassy smell in upright freezer

Is this a refrigerator in a household or an RV?
The reason I ask is that RV refrigerators use ammonia, which you can smell. If you read the article you probably read that Freon does not have an odor, in extreme cases you can smell burnt refrigeration oil when a system with a large leak has been left running, but by then the unit wouldn't be working.
If your refrigerator did in fact have a leak it wouldn’t be working, due to such a small amount of refrigerant present. ( typically about 5 ounces )
So, your gassy smell is likely from something else. I find this happens most often when potatoes or carrots are stored for long periods of time in the refrigerator, usually in the crispers. When starchy vegetables wilt ( get smaller with age ) they give off a gas. The smell eventually comes not from the starch, but from the bacteria that starts growing on it. All this happens on a microscopic level so you won't see anything. good luck

Chest freezer - hose adaptor?

That would depend on the size of the freezer. If it's a compact 5-7 cubic feet, then its not necessarily needed, but if it is a large freezer I would recommend buying the hose adapter. The basic function for the hose adapter is draining the water after defrosting the freezer.

So if it's a large freezer that will not be moved, then YES by all means, you need the adapter.
