Dell DJ Ditty MP3 Player Logo

I charged my MP3 Player, but it won't turn on!

I don't know what happened. I got a Dell DJ Ditty for Christmas, and I charged it for 2.5 hours (as it told me to in the manual before using it). Then, I turned it on, I think it may have worked for a few seconds, then turned itself off. But, then I took it to another computer (an older one with more space to download music). I plugged in the MP3 and put somewhere around 20-25 songs on it. I unplugged it from the USB, and tried to turn it on. It wouldn't do anything. It just left me with a blank screen. It seemed to not be working at all. My parents convinced me that the downloading used the charge. So, I pressed reset and recharged it (overnight, so it was more than 9 hours). I woke up and it was fully charged. Now, it still won't turn on. Is there anything that I can do?

I removed the one screw next to the headphone jack and it seems that I still can't take the MP3 player apart. Is their a service manual on this?

Thanks

Hi Katie The problem is the battery. I have had the same problem as you and I found only one way to fix it. I don't know if you want to try this your self but I did it and it worked for me and know my DJ Ditty works great. This is what I did. I took the dj ditty apart and cut the battery out but I left the little circuit board between the battery and the ditty I then bought a battery that goes in a ipod shuffle and soldered it in. The battery is a little smaller but works great. If I can be of any help please let me know.

Broken dell dj ditty.

If you have the receipt or it was manufactured within the warranty period, it would be covered - call Dell (be prepared for a long hold time).

Did you run the installation CD first? If you don't, Windows will load its own, possibly wrong, drivers.

Make sure you didn't accidentally press the player's lock button:
The keys on the Dell DJ Ditty have been locked.
Unlock the keys by pressing in on and holding the
Volume/Scroll/Select dial until the lock icon disappears.

Reset method - Insert the end of a thin object, such as a straightened paper clip, into the reset button (near the headphone jack).

Also make sure your operating system is Windows XP - it won't work on anything before or after.

The Musicmatch service that this player was tied to was discontinued in October 2007, so you’re going to have problems even if we get it working again.

The DJ Ditty does recognize DRM-encryption for WMA files – make sure the license is up to date, or convert the file to mp3 format if you are experiencing licensing issues.

If you are experiencing frequent freezing, or a file system/corruption error, or getting the “Warning! Reformat with Firmware Updater!” message, there are two ways to format the DJ Ditty:

Format using Windows Media Player:
Run Microsoft Windows Media Player.
Connect the DJ Ditty to the computer.
Click the Sync button on the top of the menu.
Click the "Format storage media" button on the right-hand side of the screen.
Disconnect the DJ Ditty and power it back on.

Reload or upgrade the Firmware:
Connect the DJ Ditty to the computer.
Download and install the latest firmware from http://support.dell.com
Run the firmware upgrade program with the "Format Data Area" checked.
Disconnect the DJ Ditty and power it back on.

Dell DJ Ditty

We may be in luck - I actually found an owner's manual for this one. Did you run the installation CD first? If you don't, Windows will load it's own, possibly wrong, drivers.

Make sure you didn't accidentally press the player's lock button:
The keys on the Dell DJ Ditty have been locked.
Unlock the keys by pressing in on and holding the

Also make sure your operating system is Windows XP - it won't work on anything before or after.

The Musicmatch service that this player was tied to was discontinued in October 2007, so your going to have problems even if we get it working again. Use Windows Media Player 10 instead (downgrade if you have the current version 11 installed).

Let me know how everything turns out.

Dj ditty

Reset, make sure lock is not engaged, then
Try this: disconnect the player from the computer, turn it off, hold in the volume + button, and reconnect the player to the computer while holding the volume + button in. Keep holding the volume + button for an additional 5-50 seconds. Windows should eventually go into recovery mode and revive the player- it will pop up a window that says Found New Hardware Wizard.

My dj ditty don't work

Same here! There must be a big problem with these things. I called DELL....that is a major ordeal in itself dealing with them.....but finally got ahold of a guy at corporate. He said they didnt make them anymore....wouldnt say why and offered a $100.00 discount on anything else they sold. I got a camera and they took off the money. Good luck! They are hell to deal with!
