The camera has a light-detector to determine which mode to use in the day or night and emits a infrared light which produces an image rendered in black and white. The infrared flash emits a soft red glow. If the camera is taking still photos, this flash is brief, but if the camera is shooting video then the light is continuous.
Apart from the battery compartment, the entire front face of the unit lifts up in order to access numerous controls and buttons. A slide switch allows for 3 positions: on, off and "aim". When set to "aim" a laser beam is emitted in order to target the camera, however it must be said that in sliding the switch back over to the "on" position, and in closing the cover, the camera may well move from its intended target. One useful mode is in testing the camera - this allows you to move through the target area while you watch an LED (light) on the unit. If you're within trigger-range the LED lights up. Again, when you close the camera you may adjust the targetting.
This is what a night shot should look like:

You should have three different choices for lighting: daylight, night, and automatic. If those are not your options, you should have some options similar to those. You might have: inside, outside or automatic. Make sure that if you have it inside or it is dark, it is set at night or inside and if you do not want to go through the trouble of setting it every time you use it, try setting it on automatic and see if it works then.

This could be because of the infared led or from the digital switch inside the camera for the night vision pickup of the lens
you will probably have totake this in to get it repaired , can you see the infared led come on in front of the camera?

This is because you might have kept auto settings so that camera senses some light from the other sources and it doesnot flash.

use a usb/mini usb adapter cable...one comes with new Moultrie i-40/i-60 cams, or get one for Blacberry or Sony cellphones...same fit...older d-40 cams use different size.Plug cable between pc and cam;go to"My Computer"...should show a HDD identified as Moultrie. Doulbe click...enjoy pics; no software needed.

My i40 seems to be to be zapping the sd card, I let the camera take a few pictures and then when I put the sd card in my card reader it says card error.

Are you formatting cards on PC? Don't! Let camera format(automatic). Also delete pics using camera and not thru PC or card reader...problem may be card reader.

Moultrie gamespyi40 error code 020000

I just spoke to the moultrie techy about the same error message I have with my i40, This is a false positive message, the i40 uses infra red instead of a flash; the self test is testing for flash and giving the false error. This was an oversight by Moultrie, no down-loadable patches are available to correct this at this time
