Question about Acer Aspire 5100 Notebook

Acer Aspire 5100-blinking cursor at top/bottom screen after POST

The serial number label is faded to where it's just a white label. Is there anywhere else that the SN can be found.
This is a friends laptop, I'm just the lucky tech buddy who works on it. When I first got it, it would only fine the HDD in the BIOS about every other time that I booted it. I finally got a new copy of Vista Business on it, but then when it booted, after the POST screen. It would only show a white blinking cursor at the top and bottom on the left of the screen. I switched hard drives with a working one from a Dell Latitude D800. So I put the Dell HDD in the Acer, and the Acer hard drive in the Dell. I installed Vista Ultimate on the Acer, Install went fine. Again after restarting all the Acer does is the blinking cursors at the top/bottom left of the screen. The Dell (Acer orig HDD) loaded windows XP pro just fine, no problems. On the Acer, I took out the RAM, and tried to boot. No beeps, no nothing. I'm at a lose as to what to try next.
Also, How can I access the PQService partition on the Acer hard drive?
Is there any on board diagnostics that I could run, on the Acer?
Thanks

Ok, sounds like its got a few major dramas going on but hopefully we can get things going. if its completely failing to post it can only be a bios, ram or CPU failure. if it is posting but not loading windows there can be a few probles. usually if your switching and installed OS from one to another the HAL (hardware application layer) needs to be re-installed to cope with changes in APTI and single/multicore processors. this can be sorted by using the repair console from the windows installation. the serial number comes up with the registration page automatically put onto the OS when installed from the ACER backup partition. this can be accessed via alt+f10 on posting, as if you were going f8 for safemode.

The sticker on bottom of my laptop is faded and unreadable... is there anywhere else I can find the s/n?

Yes! You should be able to see the serial number in the BIOS screen of your laptop. Press F2 as your machine starts up and you will be presented with the BIOS screen. The serial number should be on that first page. Thank you for using FixYa!

I need the serial number for my acer laptop, however, the label on the bottom is faded and I can't read it. Where can i find that

As far as I know the only location of your serial number is on the bottom, and if the sticker is faded you may need to contact Acer, or your retailer, also try looking on your reciept.

Hope this helps ^^

Acer 5100 Has no screen

It sounds like the mainboard or CPU died. Generally the hard drive is fairly easy to remove, look on the bottom or the side for a screw labeled "HDD", which should uncover the hard drive area.
