Question about Thermador SGS36GS Gas Cooktop

Open Question

Frozen knob on Thermador SGS36

The knobs on this unit push down before they can be turned to start the gas and burner. One of the knobs is frozen, i.e. it cannot be pushed down. It looks somewhat corroded at the base of the knob where it enters the little metal box below. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Harry

Take apart the cooktop and it is the potentior on the valve for the simmer burner that is usually the issue.

Do you hear gas? If so, take a needle and put it through each one of the small holes where the gas comes out.... Also look for a little "white-dust" where the sparker makes the spark. (located probaly at back of burner). If there is a white dust build-up scrape it off with something (needle) and give her another go...

SOURCE: Clogged burner on gas cooktop

lowly is it the left burners that won't lite? I only ask as depending on the model some of the Thermador cook tops had simmer control burners. This is a 3 part system on the burners. 1 a simmer control, 2 electric solenoid, 3 potentiors. When you turn on the burner the potentior tells the simmer control to send power to the gas solenoid. At the same time the unit will spark. If your unit has extra low on the left 2 burners then you have this system. The usual problem in the potentior. Hope this helps.

sounds like you have a bad switch. maybe on the large burner.. some of those switches can be replaced without the whole harness.

I would say that pop was one of you igniters.  either that or the stove is not installed correctly and when it gets warm, thermal expansion makes the metal pop.  I would say that I would use caution and discontinue its use.  Most problems with these need to fixed professionally.

Burner igniters keep sparking long after the burner is lighted

The igniter is activated by a pressure switch, when you press a button or push in the knob, sounds like it has a bit of gunk in ther e stopping it from coming out again.

Gas not reaching one hob. Have cleaned jet

if you cleared the hole and there is no gas comming out, then it is mostly a problem at the valve in under the knob.
the valve may have been frozen, or burned frozen, and you broke a small pices on the metal par( it stickes down to the valve top) and , when you turn the knob it turns the valve. that will have to replaced.

i think most places sell the whold valve pices about 50, easy to replace, if you get the top off.

We have a thermador 5 burner gas range top and the pilot light seems to have gone out. The burners don't go on but we smell gas. How do we re-light it?

Most gas range tops no longer have pilot lights but use an electronic ignition (sparker) to light the burner. Normally when you turn the burner on you should here a snapping or sparking sound, at which point the burner should ignite. Here is a link to the user manual for 36" - 5 burner Thermador rangetop...maybe this will help: http://dl.owneriq.net/a/ac64ae7b-1ed3-44a3-9235-e4dbd8fe4628.pdf

By the way, in the short term you could always use a match to light the burner. JUST BE VERY CAREFUL THE YOU HAVE THE MATCH LIT AND OVER THE DESIRED BURNER BEFORE YOU TURN KNOB TO START THE BURNER!!!!

Cook top burner knobs all 4 not able to turn

Hello,

Just to be clear, non of the 4 burner controls/knobs will turn ? You are familiar with this unit are you ?

Typically you must push down and turn to activate them.

Let me know if that is not the solution.

Good Luck :)

Burner with intermittent feature won't light once hot; spart OK - - no gas.

mdpaul, sounds to me like 1 of the burner switches for the ignition is sticking. There is a small area where the switches turn to that shuts down the ignition. If the switch has failed from heat or is out of position, this can cause this issue. The switch is designed so when you turn the knob it closes the contact. The switch has to be locked into postion on this model. There is a push fit type retainer that locks this down. Pull the knobs off and turn with a pair of plyers to see if one is moving around. If so then with a deep socket, see if you can tighten the retainer by pushing down on it. Hope this helps.

Gas Flow

suspect problem is with the regulator on the gas bottle as it would be unusual for all burners to be faulty at the same time. try substituting a new regulator
