its probably something in the motor. you may have to replace the motor which could cost around $50.

This owner's manual is available on the Eureka website. www.eureka.com Type in your model # down in the right corner, search & buy accessories.Click go, then choose either the 402A or 402A-1. It is the same owner manual for either one.

Had exactly the same problem with my upright Eureka Model 5893 bagless. Eventually, the handle would get hot, and finally it just quit. When handle was disassembled, the wires were melted and it was toast. Ordered a switch after talking to several repair men. Talked to Eureka, too, and they were absolutely no help. Cheap wiring and switch made in China. Good luck trying to find a switch. vacuum-depot.com has switches, so you might try there, but make sure you get the 3-prong switch (same switch used on Eureka's Genesis. It is Part #27871.

Eureka Boss Capture - bagless upright NOISE PROBLEM FIXXED!!!
I had the same noise problem as everyone else here and found no solutions on the web. i took the thing apart a few different times to no avail. i read here that it could possibly be the brush bearings but i didn't believe that was the problem. i removed the brush and spun the bearings in my hand and they seemed to be ok, i didnt feel or hear anything wrong. i looked around the house for something to use to lubricate the bearings but i found nothing. i then remembered the all purpose wonder tool that is olive oil. i carefully added some to brush bearings on both sides and spun them in my hand a little bit and put everything back together. Voala! The vacuum now runs as quiet as the day i first bought it. i no longer feel ashamed to vacuum at 11pm and my neighbors can get some sleep :D
