Unfortunately I have no cable close to the room that I have my pc in. I am using a dlink d 524 router connected to the modem in the other room on default settings not connected to a PC. Now all my naibers are using my internet for free. I have tride using ip http://192.168.0.1. and use username admin and password left blank. It just keeps asking for the username/password over and over. Is this because I am not conected with a wire and if so any way around it???

Re: secure dlink di 524 with wireless connection.
One of your neighbors may have changed it for you, but you have the hardware, just reset it, and get a LONG cable to it, as you only get problems trying to set the Router with the wireless connection.
After resetting to factory default,
Change admin password
Set wireless security:
Wikreless/Wireless MAC filter.
- here you allow witch MAC address is allowed to access your network.
you find your own MAC address by typing ipconfig /all in a cmd.

Try to reconfigure your wireless network on your DI-524.
To access the configuration page of your router by Default type in on the address bar 192.168.0.1. On the login page by default the Username is admin and leave the Password blank.
If inside the the configuration page of the router
> Click on WIRELESS located on the left side and you will have the wireless setting of your network > Change the wireless network name > Under security choose either WEP or WPA -PSK for this type of router. > Type in your new network key (also know as Passphrase of Key1).
For WEP use 0 to 9 Number or A to F character and it should be exactly 10 characters. For WPA-PSK you can use alpha numeric from 0 to 9 and from A to Z. The minimun character would be 8.
> Click on apply > Click on continue. Try accessing your wireless network first using your wireless computer. If you are connected to your wireless network try connecting to the Internet.
You need to cascade the Dlink wireless router to your RV042.
Suppose your RV042 has a default IP Address of 192.168.1.1, and the DLINK IP uses 192.168.0.1. Your Physical connection is from the regular port of the RV042 going to the WAN/Internet Port of the DLink wireless router.
Once you do that, your Dlink router should automatically obtain an IP from the main router. If it did, configure your wireless settings and you should be able to connect via wireless.
This is just one way to cascade your router to another router.

here you get the manual sir: ftp://ftp.dlink.se/Products/di-products/di-524/Documentation/DI-524_manual.pdf -

visible & unavailable means that the wireless security settings are not the same on the recently formatted computer, as on the rest of the network.
Open the wireless configuration for any computer that can connect to the network and copy the security settings (wep or higher) to the unconnecting pc
connect to the router by cable from the non-connecting pc, use the web interface at http://192.168.0.1 to read the security settings, and copy the settings to the unconnecting pc
This shouldn't really be any problem simply use a short "Uplink" ethernet cable to join the routers thru the uplink port, or any port really, and that way ya should be able to wifi and access the net, set ya router that connects to the net for DCHP and disable that setting in the Wifi router and ya should be good to go?
just had same prob if you go to dlink site in phillipines there you will find the latest firmware for dlink 524 . i couldnt belive i had to do this as all links to uk site had no pages diplayed .i went first to .singapore site then to australia but the most uptodate firmware i found was on phillipines site
