I have an older carrier packaged unit model #585H, AC worked well all summer turned on heater for fiost time this year , fan is working but no heat. i removed the panel and started the furnance again and the pilot light will lite for about 20/30 seconds then goes out , burners do not ignite electronic starter is ticking. any ideas? Any help is appreciated My unit is a roof mount if it matters

No. This is strictly a gas package unit, not a heat pump. the condenser fan motor should NOT run when their is a call for heat from the thermostat. The condenser fan only runs with the compressor on a call for cooling. Hopefully the compressor is not running @ the same time, but if it is, it would make sense that the contactor for the compressor & condenser fan motor is stuck closed OR the low voltage cooling wires are shorted straight to a 24Volt control wire.
Ok first thing is it sounds like a wiring problem. So first step is to make sure the thermostat is properly connected. Which... the main thing here is there needs to be 24v dc power coming from your control board (transformer) going to the thermostat..generally that is the red wire. All the thermostat does is connect that "red" wire (power) to one of the other wires to complete a circuit. So make sure you have 24 volts... (generally about .5amps) . if you have power than switch thermostat to fan only should energize the green wire only. then switch to ac and move temp low enough that the ac should turn on and that should energize the yellow wire. for sure one of those wires is incorrect now or the fan wouldn't be on OR THE THERMOSTAT IS NOT CONNECTING THEM AND IT IS BAD. Now about the compressor and fan.... those same wires run out to the compressor unit... ok the yellow for ac.. greeen does not go to compressor unit that is for fan only (vent).. red carries the same 24 volts... one difference here is that most carrier units only have the one transformer....so you run the red wire is the +pos 24 volt..and then a "common " wire is needed which is the Ground or neg... that wire on a carrier is brown usually but could be different depending installer. The orange wire goes to the pump reversing valve it is always energized when on ac mode...when heater is on in the winter it is heat pump and is not energized so just connect the orange and yellow together... tell me more specifics if this doesn't help and i'm sure I can help you... thanks Chuck
Dan is this a new system, or has some work on the system (to include the thermostat) been done recently?
Sounds like the thermostat may be wired wrong. From what you describe, the igniter element is coming on, as though you are calling for heating. Do you allow the ignitor to keep going and see if the gas fires off, or are you seeing this and shutting down the system immediately?
If you had the t-stat changed recently, or this is a new system, contact the installing contractor. It may be under warranty.
Hi, this is an odd voltage 380 volts. Is it a 3 phase unit? To get a 220 volt 50hz condenser fan motor, you will have to go through a refrigeration/air conditioning parts house and order this. 60hz you would have no problem finding one in stock. Carrier is a good unit, and have been around for many years. You shouldn't have any problems locating one. Sincerely, Shastalaker7 PS You will need to go through a wholesale parts house.
The unit senses a failure to ignite, so it goes into safety mode keeping the blower running to prevent overheating and fires. And keeping the inducer motor running to prevent the same, as well as raw gas build up inside the unit.
The newer systems are "smarter" and can detect more specific problems and failures. The older ones simply know that the thing didn't light, so they bring on the fans for safety.
the fan is controlled by a fan center or a stack switch. as burners light and heat up the spring sensor on the bulkhead above burners heats up and turns and a a point energizes the indoor fan if it gets to hot the burners go out on safty. sounds like a fan control is bad tap on them gently and they sometimes break loose but if not then have a pro replace fan control and test heat exchanger.
