Well, it is an easy fix, it just costs 100-150 to fix it. The optics are off. Try a Disc player cleaner first. Any retail store carries them and are good to have anyway. run it through a few times, then put in a store bought disc to try. If not, it needs a transport. Weight the cost to the return. Did you buy it "as is" did the seller say "it works" if they did, email the seller for a return address and refund. If they don't want to, file a dispute with Paypal. Don't feel bad! lots of great stuff on EBAY! if the seller has feedback, leave a negative feedback to warn others of what happened to you! people do look at feedback all the time! and nobody wants a bad reputation no matter what they do! Hope this helps, if you need more help, send a response and I'll try and help.
If you are getting sound from the radio as far as listening to the radio station. It might mean that the CD player is bad. Have you tried cleaning the player to see if that works. It could be that the lens is not reading the discs. Does any codes come up or does it say error.
I would check these things out. I think that the sound system is fine. If you can hear on the radio then it is on the radio itself more or likely.
I think the red/white RCA plugs on the back of the CDE-7858 are outputs for the sub-woofer -- they won't work for aux inputs like iPod. According to Alpine dealers, the 7858 will not accept an aux input -- bummer, I had the same desire. R, Jim
