How to hookup Auxiliary heat (and/or use an extra wire at the thermostat)

They don't always use the correct wire colors,if it is labeled w it is for your strip heat, shouldn't hurt to hook it up,most likely they used it for the strip heat, most heat pumps are wired to turn on your strip heat when the heatpump is in defrost mode and it is controlled by the heat pump, you can hook this to the emerg. heat or w2 :)

Have 3 ton elec a/c and heat - heat is on and air is blowing cold, unit is new (15 mos) home 1350 sf - breakers are OK, filter is clean - what can you tell me?

If its not a heat pump- check the white wire connection on the thermostat. If it IS a heat pump, check the blue wire connection on the thermostat. Both of these wires control the heat in their respective systems.

Heat comes on when the temperature setting calls for cool.

getting heat in the cooling mode leans toward the reversing valve in the outside unit. it changes the flow of refergerint so that the hot air you get outside in the summer is blown inside in the winter. another possibility is that the reversing valve isn't getting 24v check to see if you have 24v at O and C either at the t-stat, furnace, or the outside unit. if you check at the furnace rember the safty switch for the lower door if that switch is open you will have no power. i would look at the t stat first if you have 24v there go to the outside . 24v present outside will mean a bad valve or board, no 24v means a bad or broken conection in the control wire between the stat and the outside unit(usally the orange wire)

Trouble Wiring in Rheem heat pump

The red wire goes back to the furnace red, the blue back to the thermostat blue, the brown back to the furnace C terminal, the yellow back to thermostat Yellow (if there is a Y terminal on that furnace, land your Y's there. The purple wire outside comes back and ties to the W terminal on the furnace. Now you have a dual fuel unit so you will need a dual fuel kit or a thermostat that has dual fuel capability along with an outdoor sensor.

Please note. Not all installers use the proper color codes when they install or replace equipment. It may be necessary go go to the furnace or outdoor unit to verify what wires are for what purpose. Also be sure there are no splices in the wire that could change the wire colors between components.
  • R (red) or Rh (Red heat) 24 volts from equipment.
  • Rc (Red cooling) 24 volts from transformer in cooling equipment.
Note: If only furnace has a transformer and cooling equipment does not jumper Rc and Rh.
  • W (White) sends 24 volts to furnace control to start the heating cycle.
  • W2 (no standardized wire color, usually whatever wire color is available) controls second stage heat.
Note: W2 is most often used for heat pumps to control what is called emegency heat or Auxillary heat, and most often will use the white wire.
  • Y (yellow) often (blue) is used, controls cooling unit (outdoor condensing unit) also is used for heat pump heat.
  • Y2 (no standardized wire color, usually whatever wire color is available) controls second stage cooling.
  • G (Green) controls the fan "on" operation of the furnace/air handler. Also often is used to start the blower for many electric furnaces.
  • C (common) most often brown but can also be black or other color available to installer.
  • O (orange) Energizes heat pump reversing valve for cooling (Trane and most other brands).
  • B (Blue) Energizes heat pump reversing valve for heating (Rheem, Ruud and Weatherking).

Any will work provided you have it is a Heat Pump thermostat. I recommend honeywell or totaline.

Manual Thermostat replcaement with Programmable Digital unit.

Hopefully there are markings on the old t-stat as to what terminal is what.
on the honeywell 8000 use the heat pump labeling and then the standard wiring would be
R- red
AUX-white
Y- yellow
B- O/B
C- black
G- green
There should not be a bare wire, it probably just has the insulation stripped back way too far.
You should probably open the furnace and compare the terminal label in the furnace to the wire color. normally yellow and blue pass through the furnace and are wire nutted to wires going to the outdoor unit. In the furnace the white wire will connect to the w or w1 terminal. also, you will need to set the Honeywell stat to have the following parameters.
170-7
190-1
200-0
other parameters that I did not specify, you may read the manual and make your own decision but I recommend factory settings for the other parameters
