Sound like your motor is going out ,,,, the wiring at the motor may also be loose from out of balance loads

My washer works perfect except in the heavy duty fast/fast setting It agitates and seems to be working very hard then stops. it starts for awhile then stops again. There is also a smell of hot metal.

Double check your coupling work first then try the drum bearings by reaching in through the front and see how much movement the drum has? Does it rotate smoothly? Have you run it with the access panel off and listened close up?

Washer wont drain

when you lift the lid there should be a switch if you push it down with a pen or something it should drain If that does not work then it's the control knob but I'm betting it the the lid switch

Washer does not work at regular speed, it works on other setting

Since the machine works in two of the three speeds the problem points to either the timer or the switch that sets the speed.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

Go to the control panel category and see their diagram and list of switches and parts.

These aren't that difficult to replace but they aren't inexpensive.

Kenmore heavy duty 2 way tumble washing machine

You may have a broken inner tub spider. Check for play between the inner drum and the outer tub by moving the inner drum up and down.
If there is excessive play, the spider is broken causing an unbalanced load and therefore no high speed spin can be achieved.

In this case the inner drum would need to be replaced, which means taking the machine almost completely apart. A good tech can do it in about 1.5 hours.

Washer problem

THE SPEED SELECTOR SWITCH MAY BE SHORTED CAUSING THE MOTOR TO TRY AND RUN ON BOTH THE LOW AND HIGH SPEED WINDINGS. THIS WILL PULL TOO MUCH CURRENT AND TRIP THE BREAKER.
THE MOTOR WINDINGS FOR THE HIGH SPEED COULD BE SHORTED CAUSING EXCESSIVE CURRENT DRAW.
