Alienware 766 laptop screen black out

Hi all,

I've been having problems with my machine. sometimes I can run it fine for a long time and never have any problems and other times with in minutes the screen goes black but everything else is still running fine. Sometimes I can press the power button slightly and it will come back on but mostly if I do that it will restart and usually be fine again. Any ideas on what is happening?
I've checked all the hibernate/sleep setting and power options everything is fine there. I'm wondering if it's getting too hot or something?
I ran mobile meter and it says its running at 75 C and the hard drive starts out a 22C. I just bought a laptop cooler but I havn't noticed any changes yet. I'm pulling my hair out as to how to fix this!!! I don't game at all, so the laptop is just being used for surfing, msn, and such.

Does anyone know what is causing this?

Thanks

There are no viruses, bad programs, ect. I am an advanced computer user and work on all of my computers myself. I've never ran into anything that I can't fix on my own until this issue. I don't game AT ALL, and updating my direct X version is definaitly not related to my problem.

use a program called speccy, it should idenitify your actual laptop model, if not look on the bottom of the laptop, it should have 2 sets of numbers one is a series number, the other is an actual model number, the model number is what you use on the alienware site to find drivers.

Alienware x51 random restarts

Hello Wiryan =)
Sounds like either a power supply or graphics card issue to me. You could try downloading Almico's speedfan to check your temperatures just to be sure that they are fine.
You should contact Dell, they can probably troubleshoot the issue pretty fast/send a technician to you. The X51 randomly shutting down is a common issue if you check the forums over there. http://en.community.dell.com/owners-club/alienware/f/3746/t/19437557.aspx?PageIndex=1
I assume you have updated every driver to the latest?
Hope this helps! :)

Sounds like a problem with the graphics adapter.
If you haven't already done so, update the video drivers, and test again.
I would also say the clock is ticking.
If you don't have a successful fix soon, I would demand a replacement unit (or otherwise return for refund). The tech support might have to escalate, but I would insist on a replacement unit (this should also get to an American tech.)

Hi caeggleston,

"every time I try to run any PC game I have" Running the games before, do you encounter the same problem you posted. If not there's a problem, have you read the system requirements of the game your playing before installing, unless its a mini game like book of worm etc. but most game now a days requires a decent video card considering you're using a AGP video card. try to run 3D Mark 2003, 3D Mark 2006 or FurMark (for stability) if there's no problem with the card it should stand the stress test or just a simple test. If you see garbled image during testing, your video card have problems consider replacing them.

Hopefully this information helps.
Thank you for using FixYa.

Hi, My laptop shows black pixels green, and white ones purple! It shows everything very bad as I turn it on! even the black boot page is green! :( Please help me tosolve this problem. thanx.

Hi:
One way to narrow down the problem is to plug an external monitor up to your laptop, and see how the display looks on it. you can toggle the display to external or both. On my laptop I hit my function key, then F8, but your model might be different. If the external display has bad color, your laptop graphics card is bad, and if the external display is fine, you have a bad LCD on your laptop!

Please i am having Gateway Laptop 600 ygr with graphic card ATI Radeon 7500. I want to improve its 3d performance by running grahics more than 64MB or improving with acceleratedx. Thanks frank

Unfortunately with this model laptop the graphics card is not upgradeable. If you are attempting to do 3D graphics you will want a higher end laptop with a higher end processor and video card. For high end laptops that will perform much better for this use I would check out http://www.alienware.com/ for their line of higher end laptops.

PROBLEM WITH IMAGE

It most certainly sounds like a graphics card problem, especially since it's been working fine up to this point. You might also want to try a different monitor cable just to make sure. Although the components used in today's computers are much more reliable than they used to be they do still fail occasionally. Good luck.
