The best solution would be to contact HP, and get the Restoration Disk for your laptop. Just go to HP.com/Support, and in the upper left corner, click on Contact HP.

Here is HP.com/Support,
http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html
My suggestion would be to call them, as email response may be like snail response. If feasible, the
appropriate calling time is during business hours, and Monday through Friday.

I sent away for a Restoration Disk for a Compaq computer, about a year ago. At the time, the disk was free, and there was a shipping & handling cost.
Shipping and handling cost was $17 for a 5 to 7 day ship, $22 for a 2 to 3 day ship.

With a Restoration Disk you can do a Repair. (NOT a Fresh Install) This way you won't lose any of your personal stuff, (My Documents folder. My Pictures, My Music, My Videos, and personal documents you have created or saved), or downloaded applications/programs.

Using System Restore it's best to copy off to disk, all of your stuff in your My Documents folder. Negate the possible loss of irreplaceable documents. There is still the possible loss of downloaded programs and applications.

System Restore goes back to a Restore Point. This point is a date, either set by Windows or you.
If you haven't set one, Windows does it automatically. However, old restore points are frequently deleted by Windows, and 9 times out of 10, the date you need is Not there in System Restore.
(Another point to bring up, is that you should at least make a Restore Point every six months)

To go to System Restore there are many ways. You can look at System Restore, without changing anything. Let's use this way of going to System Restore,

Left-click on Start>Hover your mouse cursor on All Programs.Up to Accessories>Over and down to System Tools>Over and down to System Restore. Click on System Restore.
In the window that comes up, click on -> Restore my computer to an earlier time.
Now you will be presented with a calendar. In the calendar are dates which may be in BOLD.
These are dates you can restore your computer to. You just click on the date, and then on OK.
(Put your mouse cursor right on the date, and left-click. All System Restore states is, "Choose a date to restore back to")

If the date, is not far back enough before you had a problem, or there is no date in Bold numbers,
look at the top of the calendar. Look at the Forward/Backward Arrows. Is the Back arrow highlighted?
If so, click on it, and you can go back a month in time. Each time the back arrow is highlighted, you can keep going back.

HAVEA TOSHIBA LAPTOP WITH A FINGERPRINT IDENTIFIER TO OPEN WINDOWS, WANT TO CHANGE THE FINGERPRINT TO MY DAUGHTERS. HOW DO WE ACCESS THIS?

dentifying the fingerprint readerA fingerprint reader provides extra security for the PC. The VeriSoft Access Manager by Bioscrypt uses the fingerprint reader to identify the user, and controls access to Windows or other secure systems. Instead of typing a User ID and password, you can move your finger across a sensor to logon or start commonly used applications. Verisoft Access Manager can manage all of your different secure accounts and the required user names and passwords by recognizing your fingerprint. On HP notebook PCs, the fingerprint reader is a small metallic sensor located near the keyboard or display. By swiping your finger perpendicular to the metallic sensor you can logon to the PC, a network, or open a program. c00897920.gifBefore you can use the fingerprint reader, you must set up the fingerprint reader by registering your fingerprint with the Access Manager. Set up the fingerprint reader To set up the fingerprint reader to recognize a user, the user must have a logon account on the PC and the account must have a password. Multiple users can be registered for the fingerprint reader if each has their own user account.
  1. In Windows, double-click the VeriSoft Access Manager icon c00897921.gif in the notification area of the taskbar to open the My Identity window. Alternately, click Start > All programs > Verisoft > My Identity .
  2. Click Log On to open the VeriSoft Logon Wizard. Click Next to begin.
  3. Enter the User's Windows password in the Password field on the Introduce Yourself page, and click Next . If you have successfully logged on to Windows, click Finish to close the wizard.
  4. Click Register Fingerprints on the My Identity window, to open the VeriSoft Logon Wizard. Click Next to begin. c00897922.gif
  5. Select a finger shown on the hand graphic, and then slowly swipe your finger across the sensor. One of the squares below the hand graphic will change color when the scan is accepted. A message displays if the scan is not accepted.
  6. Swipe the same finger across the sensor again until all four squares change color, then clickNext to register the finger print. If you need to start over during the fingerprint registration process, right-click the highlighted finger on the screen and then click Start Over .
  7. If prompted to register a second fingerprint, click a different finger on the hand graphic, and then repeat steps 5 and 6.
  8. After using the Registration Wizard to registered at least 2 fingers, click Finish .
  9. To set up the fingerprint reader for a different Windows user, log on to Windows as that user and then repeat steps 1 through 8.
After registering your fingerprint you can log off and then use your registered fingers to log on to Windows. Using Fingerprint reader before registeringIf you swipe your finger across the fingerprint reader before it is set up, the Access Manager opens a logon wizard window and prompts you for informa

Hi:
I fought the same thing with another fingerprint scanner, and even spent some quality time speaking with Micro Soft Technicians....It seems they are not really supportive of fingerprint scanners,And forget getting any support for Window 7, 64 Bit version. My fingerprint scanners were Microsoft brand, and still no 64 bit support...

1. In Windows, double-click the VeriSoft Access Manager icon in the notification area of the taskbar.
2. On the “My Identity” page, click Log On, located in the upper-left corner of the page.
The VeriSoft Access Manager Logon Wizard opens.
3. On the “Introduce Yourself” page, enter the user's Windows password, if one has been established,
and then click Next.
4. On the “Services and Applications” page, click I want to, and then click Register Fingerprints.
NOTE: By default, VeriSoft Access Manager requires registration of at least 2 different

5. When the VeriSoft Access Manager Registration Wizard opens, click Next, and then slowly swipe
your finger across the sensor.
NOTE: The right index finger is the default finger for enrolling the first fingerprint. You can
change the default by clicking the finger you want to register first, on either the left hand or

6. Continue swiping the same finger over the fingerprint sensor until the finger on the screen turns

highlighted finger on the screen and then click Start Over.
7. Click a different finger on the screen to register, and then repeat steps 5 and 6.
NOTE: If you click Finish before registering at least 2 fingers, an error message is

HP --Bioscrypt Verisoft fingerprint reader -- Error

Oh your going to hate me but unfortunately under vista if your credential manager gets corrupted the only way around is a total reimage - back to when it came out of the box. To do a full reimage using your recovery partition on power up to HP post screen tap F11 until the recovery manager starts - select advanced tab - full system recovery no backup - full destructive - this time when you get to your client details for setup after the recovery process select your password with care and when the time comes for for the finger print reader enabling under the credential manager the finger to use is your right small finger = the little pinkie >> it gets less work and is less prone to possible damage - small irregulaties are enough to fail a reading.
So I hope this helps but unfortunately a full destructive recovery is required.

Forgot my Verisoft Logon Password

Hi,

Not sure if you got this sorted, but all i did as i couldn't remember my pasword and could only login using fingerprint

go to
Start
type 'CMD'
Right Click and select run as administrator
In the command window type NET USER XXXXX welcome01

Where XXXXXX is your user Name
This will force the change of password, and doesnt mess with Verisoft. Now to confirm it's worked go to

Start
Control Panel
Users
Select Change password
in old password type 'welcome01'
in new type which ever you require as your password, it will accept the change.

This worked for me 100%

Cheers
Alan
