Has lock on display - how do we get past this?

Firstly here is alink to a manual. Check out page 28.

http://dl.owneriq.net/e/e0133286-87ca-4872-8218-545badef4052.pdf

Basically as it says you need to hold down the temperature up and and temperature down button for approx. 2 seconds. The confusion normally comes if the unit is turned OFF whilst the lock in enabled. If you turn the unit back ON the lock is still enabled and it will stop you doing this. To operate from this point you need to first make sure there is electrical power to the heater. BEFORE you turn it on via the ON/OFF button, deactivate the lock as above.
Hope that clears up any confusion.

How do you turn off the child lock on a RinnaiRCE229H natural gas Heater?

Basically hold in the child lock button for two seconds. If the child lock was activated and you then turned the unit offt the child lock remains set and will stop you turning the unit on. To deactivate, make sure you have the power lead pluggeed in and turned on. Before you depress the ON/OFFbutton, hold in the child lock button for two seconds. This will deactivate the child lock and allow you to turn the heater on.

Here is a link to a users manual, check out page 11.

I had my heater on and when I went to turn it off it showed "HH" in the digital display

On many types of heat controler HH stands for high, high set limit, if your unit shut down because of this-look@ the rear of the unit below the handle close to the fan for a reset, push it in and see if it starts back up for ya, hope this helps.

Taking childlock off

This is the manual for a different model heater but maybe it operates the same way....

http://www.rural-energy.com/publications/catalog/documents/document-498.pdf

deactivate the LOCK press and hold the
button for 3 seconds until the indicator
goes off.
During normal operation the LOCK may be
activated and all controls, other than the
OFF switch, will be locked. Deactivating
the LOCK releases the controls.
If the LOCK is activated while the unit is
turned OFF, then all functions will be locked
including the ON/OFF function. If the unit
is turned OFF while the LOCK is activated,
it cannot be turned ON again until the
LOCK is deactivated.
