Black rectangle on the bottom of the screen when playing tape

I posted this problem earlier, giving the incorrect model number. When we play a tape (we have tried several), there is a black rectangle in the center of the bottom of the screen, measuring about 10" wide by 4" high. When we fast forward the box disappears.

Why GE TV plays color DVD/VCR tapes in black and white

Some inputs on tvs won't process the color signal. Try one of the other inputs. Mine does the same. If u have already used the working ones on something else, U will need a switch to select one or the other available at Radio Shack if u can find one.

Shuts down after 8 seconds of play.

Does the tape hang out when you eject the cassette?
8 seconds is about the time that the VCR brain allows the mechanism to run when there is a problem before shuting down. Just guessing from the model number, but I'd say the unit needs a belt job.

Picture Problem

Turn off the closed caption with the original remote. If you do not have the origianal remote borrow one or buy one as you cannot remove the box or turn off the closed caption without it.
