Re: how to set to default printer
Install the software first, then connect the printer. Once all drivers are installed go to start, settings, printers. Find the printer, right mouse click on it and choose "set as default printer", that's it.

Do you know the current settings? If so, log into it and set it up. There should be a setting within the web page to restore to factory defaults. I don't know if this is something that can be done without logging into it.
You don't have to manually set the printer to receive faxes. Your printer will automatically receive a fax when it recognizes a fax tone/signal/transmission. Just as long as the fax settings are correctly configured and the printer is connected to a working phone/fax line.
Do you want the font as the default font on the printer or do you want the application to call the font?
Application wise, to get a 20 cpi character font, you need to place the font change into the document.
Remember, even if you set the default font as a 20 cpi, if the application calls for a 10 cpi font like Courier, the printer will change the default font to the 10 cpi font for the life of the current print job unless there are additional font calls within the print job.
The software (Application always overcomes default settings)
Quoted from the manual:
The HP all-in-one will not automatically answer calls. You must receive all faxes manually by pressing Start Fax Black or Start Fax Color. For information on receiving faxes manually, see Receive a fax manually. You might use this setting if the majority of calls on this phone line are voice calls and you rarely receive faxes.
This page has more information:
This is no doubt a windows setting. It's not unusual for the default printer to be the last one installed. If you are using Windows XP, select Control Panel then Printers and Faxes. In the Printers and Faxes window you should see the installed printers on your system. Right click on the printer icon you want and in the drop-down-menu just left click on Set as Default Printer. That should set the selected printer as the default printer for your computer.
Check settings first....is auto-answer on....rings to answer set at 1 or 2...make sure receive faxes to memory is not turned on...what you could do is restore all settings to factory defaults. This can be found in the menus. If none of this works...replace the fax modem.
