Having difficulty removing rear brake drum on 2003 Suzuki Aerio.

This is the first time I have worked on the rear brakes. There is a phillips head screw showing on the outside drum face. Does it have to be removed before the drum will slide off. Some rust showing around the axle hub where the drum attaches so have sprayed it with penetrating oil.

Yes the phillips head screws have to be removed, on some models there are two more holes in the face of the drum to insert threaded bolts to remove the drum, simply thread the bolts in to remove the drum.

Yep to 8mm bolts and wind them in and it comes off , just clean the threads in the drum and give a good soak with wd40 before hand

I have a 2000 suziki grand vitara and cant furure out how to remove the rear drums

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the rear wheel(s).
  3. Release the parking brake.
  4. Remove the parking brake lever cover screws and loosen the brake cable locking nut.
  5. Install 2, 8mm bolts into the brake drum holes and uniformly tighten each bolt. Tighten each bolt until the brake drum is removed from the vehicle. If there is difficulty in removing the drum, insert a small tool through the hole in the rear of the backing plate, and hold the automatic adjusting lever away from the adjuster. Using another narrow, flat tool at the same time, reduce the brake shoe adjuster by turning the adjusting wheel.
If the drum is difficult to pull off using the bolts mentioned above, the parking brake is most likely the cause and will have to be adjusted "IN" to prevent drum to shoe contact.

My break lights wont work on my 2003 suzuki aerio

Sounds like your brake light switch, located on the brake pedal, has gone out. Shouldn't cost too much more than $20 to get a new part and about 30 min. to fix. Good luck and thanks for using FixYa!

Can't remove rear brake drums on 2002 aerio

Sometimes drums can stick. Make sure the handbrake is released and give it some hard knocks with a rubber mallet. Also try twisting the drums left and right as you pull, they should come free.
