How old is the compressor ? This trouble shooting is directed to the vane and screw types of air compressors.

Caution,
For exact information on the equipment you are working on, go to the manufacturer’s maintenance and repair manual.

Here are some possibilities.

Compressor does not reach design pressure or capacity:
Air Pressure safety valve is leaking
Receiver air valve is open
Unloader valve is leaking
Loose Piping or fittings

Compressor will not load or unload:
Unloader valve defective
Air control valve is sticking or dirty
Unloader pressure is improperly set too high or too low
Water in the control lines
Plugged control lines

The air compressor CFPM is low:
Dirty air compressor air filter
Defective air intake control valve
High idle on power source improperly set
Damaged or worn rotor blades

I have two comp and they both are now dumping there oil throgh my air dryer.

With out a model # my suggestion would be to replace the separator on both units. Also make sure the scavenge line is not plugged. The separator removes oil from the compressed air and the scavenge line sucks the oil that is removed by the separator back to the air end. If either the scavenge line is plugged or the separator is fouled (dirty) the oil builds up and is carried over to the dryer and eventually Thur out the entire air system. If your equipment being used can not take any oil you need to take care of this problem asap.

My 185 ingersoll rand tow behind compressor shuts down when I open the valve to blow out sprinkler system...why

I worked at a tool rental store while attending college and noticed that IR compressors would shut down for a variety of safety reasons. Most common was low oil (engine), high temp (engine) and high air temp (compressor) and safety valve measuring access flow or free flow as if the hose becomes disconnected from tool (OSHA safety). Check all the safety control features of your unit for possible answer. Good luck

Ingersol rand model SS3-E runs but does not build any air pressure. Air just blows out the intake filter.

the back pressure valve has failed it costs about 15.00 and can buy from any truck parts store That's Peterbilt trucks or any large truck stores it's one of two sizes 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch when you pull it off be sure you know which way the air flow is or it will not build up.

My rotary screw air compressor model SSREP100H

It's just too hot. Blow out the radiator weekly. There is an oil temp switch that might need replaced but the radiator is the most common problem with screw compressors. You can check the settings in the control panel, where you turn it on and off. It should be set for a high temp of 185°.

1989 Ingersoll-Rand 185 cfm air compressor will not build up air

ITS A POSSIBILITY AND YOU BETTER HOPE ITS NOT SPINNING BECAUSE THE SCREW COMPRESSOR IS LOCKED UP. CHECK THE OIL LEVEL IN THE SUMP AND SEE IF THE ROTOR WILL TURN WHEN NOT RUNNING. TYPICALLY THE DIESEL ENGINE WILL TURN HIGHER RPMS WHEN IT HAS NO DRAG ( NO COMPRESSOR HOOKED UP ). YOU CAN GET THE PARTS FROM INGERSOL RAND OR ANY RENTAL YARD - UNITED, PENSKE, SUNBELT, ETC. THEIR MECHANIC SHOPS ARE USUALLY FOR HIRE AND CAN EVEN INSTALL IT FOR A CHARGE. ALSO MAKE SURE NOTHING BUILT A NEST IN THERE. IF YOU REMOVE THE SCREW, MAKE SURE AND WATCH FOR SHIMS. THOSE SHAFTS NEED TO LINED UP PERFECT TO REDUCE VIBRATION. GOOD LUCK
