Yes. It requires replacing some resistors on the main circuit board. If you need it done, give me a shout.

I just bought a used cobra 200 gtl dx im totally clueless to cbs could u tell me where all the controls and buttons should be

  • Hi, I can help.

  • I have uploaded a pic of the Cobra 200 and labeled each knob/switch with letters to reference.
  1. A) Noise blanker - When this switch is pushed the high pitched noises are canceled leaving a more natural sounding receive. Some like it some don't.
  2. B) High Power - This button adjusts the power output of your radio. Inside the radio the pots are adjusted for a low power setting and a high power setting.
  3. C) Roger Beep - This is a beep heard by the person you are chatting with at the end of your transmission.
  4. D) The 10+ KHz - This button when pushed jumps the frequency up 10 Kilohertz to help you better navigate frequencies.
  5. E) This is where you adjust how you are going to modulate. CW is for continuous wave or Morse Code. Unless you have a key don't worry about this setting. FM is for Frequency Modulation AKA the HAM bands. AM is for Amplitude Modulation. USB and LSB are for Upper Side Band and Lower Side Band respectively.
  6. F) is the band adjustment - Each band (A, B, C, D is a set of frequencies.
  7. G) is a dimmer and the SWR calibrate. To use the dimmer push the dim button in a rapid motion. To use the SWR calibrate side press and hold the dim/calibrate button and using the SWR knob on the right side of the radio (L).
  8. H) SWR/, S/RF - If this button is in the out position then your meter will swing as usual. Push the button in to measure SWR.
  9. I) is the volume and squelch. Volume is what is adjusted to how loud you want your speaker. Squelch you adjust to take out the unnecessary white noise.
  10. J) Mic Gain and RF gain - Mic Gain is how much gain you want to your mic. RF gain is how much of the receive you want to pick up.
  11. K) Is the fine and course adjustment that you clarify your frequencies with.
  12. L) You adjust the echo and the SWR with.
  13. M) is the channel selector.

I want to install nitro knobs on a cobra 29. Can I use the useless channel 9

Do you mean use the channel 9 switch to switch on and of the nitros? Yea you can. You could also run the power of the nitro knobs to the Dynamic knob and use it as a variable power so you can dim them or brighten them to your liking. Simply unsolder the two wires from the Dynamic knob and solder them together and either tape them off or use a small piece of shrink tube. Now hopefully you understand a bit about electronics before you try nitro knobs. The power wire you will be using for your nitro knobs will need a resister on it before it hits the leds. 100 ohm is a good start. Experiment a bit with resistors. Run the power wire and the neg through the Dynamic potentiometer. It's really sweet after it's done. You can also just run it through a switch too if you like your nitros set to one brightness. Just run a resistor between the hot wire and the first led. Again 100ohm is a good start. The higher the resistance the dimmer the leds. Good luck nitros are fun.

Engien revs and lights dim when i key up

You don't say how much power you  are running, but it must be quite a bit, or you have an amp you're not telling us about.  By keying up the radio, you're putting enough load on your electrical system to pull the voltage down which causes you lights to dim, rpms to drop, etc.  When you key off, everything goes back to "normal" which means no load so the engine will surge momentarily before it recovers.  Depending on how many watts you are running, you may also be affecting the alternator regulator.  Your alternator may also be a little weak.

200 GTL DX Night glow face plate.

Icepick , there are diode in the radio to allow the voltage to flow to get those lights glowing. If the voltage is not at a specific level then you may have the problem you are describing. make sure you have 13.8 volts of power coming into the radio then check you voltage on T712 to make sure the voltage is ok also IC 5 . Check diodes 68 , 69, 71,72 for correct voltage . now you need a voltage chart. You will have to google it .

No front panel lighting

The "nightwatch" lighting uses an EL or electroluminescent material that does degrade with age. If the radio is old, then it may be lighting very dimly (check in a dark room with the dimmer at full bright). The material is connected by a ribbon to a special high voltage pulsed powersupply that runs at about 500 volt. If the power supply is working then a new face would be in order or a new radio. If the powersupply is not working it may be repairable but requires working with surface mount components. Either way, it is NOT a simple lightbulb fix. I have successfully repaired and do stock the smc components to repair but cannot get the faces through cobra ($$$). More info? Contact through www.cbshop.info
