Second Chip key for 2005 Aveo won't work

Just bought 2005 Aveo and it came with 2 chip keys. One key works fine but the second key only works to lock/unlock doors and not in ignition. It turns in ignition but engine won't turn over. Is it a programming thing or security thing>>>>anything we can do to avoid an expensive trip to the dealership?

Assuming the 2005 model year stil uses viper security systems...the chip in the key carries a magnetic resistance frequency. if the chip is damaged or corroded the frequency will change and wont engage the igntion. you can either get another key made (about 75 dollars) or bypass the ignition lockout feature.

how do you bypass the ignition lockout feature??

you'll have to get a wiring diagram of the ignition switch to see which wire is for the relay. and with a ohm meter determine the resistance of your key (usually 30 or 50 ohms) radio shack should carry the proper resistor. simply cut the wire going into and out of the ignition switch that corresponds to the security system and tie in the resistor. after that reassemble and drive.

disclaimer: if you do this it will be possible to hot wire the car making it easier to steal.

SOURCE: key lock ignition won't turn. Does it have to do

Programming won't effect if it turns or not.

The most common problem is when there is feedback pressure from the tire against a curb, up hill, etc., and that causes the steering lock to bind the key cylinder. The solution for that is to try pushing both ways on the steering wheel, as you try to turn the key, to relieve the pressure.

The second most common is wear on the key, so it helps to jiggle the key side to side, up and down, etc. as you try to turn it.

Try turning the key upside down, using the spare, etc.

As an act of desperation, you could try putting the key in, and gently tapping on it with a piece of wood or the handle of a hammer. They are beginning to make ignition locks with tumblers spring operated, at right angles to the key, and they are very easily bound up by friction, because the springs are so small and weak. This was a very common problem with the Ford Focus, and I believe Dodge picked up the same bad design.

SOURCE: ignition key won't turn

Sometimes it is the key. On certain vehicles the key has a small chip in it and over time these do get worn out. I would have a locksmith or the dealer cut you another key but please go to a reputable locksmith or dealer. I hope this works for you (it should). If not put another post and I can probably walk you through replacing the cylinder unless you feel more comfortable having a mechanic do it and paying him/her lots of money. Good luck

SOURCE: Aztek won't start, key locked in ignition, service engine light on

It is the security chips in the keys. Has this car been wrecked? Was this car made in Mexico? GM had the bright Idea of creating a security system that would do exactly this, I know on cars made in Mexico (like the HHR) You can reset the power and get the key back out, but vehicle will have to be reprogrammed with the master key. This involves turning the key from off to run position without ever going past run (i.e. start position) leave key in this position for 30 minutes. Turn key back to off for 30 seconds then back to run for 30 minutes. repeat this step three times. the last time, after 3rd 30 minute period, turn key off for 30 seconds and then try to crank. Please note this only works if the original master key is being used. You can then reprogram the second key following a similar sequence, only master key that is working has to be inserted to let alarm system know that vehicle is not being stolen only that you are trying to reprogram a key. If original master key is not being used then vehicle has to be taken to the GM dealership to program keys and possible key module replacement.

How can I start my 2005 Ford focus SE without the key chip

I'm sorry, but it is not possible to start a 2005 Ford Focus SE without the key chip. The key chip, also known as a transponder key, is a security feature that prevents unauthorized access to the vehicle. Without the key chip, the car's engine immobilizer system will prevent the car from starting.

If you do not have the original key with the chip, you will need to obtain a new key with a chip from a Ford dealership or a qualified automotive locksmith. They will be able to cut a new key to match the locks on your car and program the new key chip to work with your car's immobilizer system.

Please note that attempting to start the car without the key chip or trying to bypass the immobilizer system may cause damage to the car's electrical system and could potentially lead to other issues. It is important to have a proper working key chip to ensure the safe and reliable operation of your vehicle.

If your ignition key wont work in ignition but the second one will if a door key was cut and put on same key chain because the code and chip is on ignition key that the door key would start car....?

Hi Ruth
I would say YES as answer to your question, BUT you need to hold the 2 keys together in opposite direction witch means, both keys plastic holders are between your 2 fingers. blades are facing opposite. 1 blade goes into the ignition barrel while the other blade facing out, start the engine then let the keys.

option 2: why don't you try to remove the micro chip from the original key and stick it into the other key?

Car key not recognized

I have change several new keys which had the magnetic chips in them which had to be sync to the car, . When you have a new key made you have to sync it to the car/ magnetic chip or fob key. Link which might help sync problems with fob keys, my vehicles were GM with just the magnetic chip key and not nearly as complicated.

Car wont start..after i stuck wet keys in ignition

Give the key-hole a few days to dry out. There are electronics inside the key-hole that sense the key's position and the immobilizer chip within the key. If these short out, or any other circuits with them, the car won't start/run properly.
