Compressor click and buzz...on and off..

Hi,

I have read several posts related to this type of issues with Kenmore fridge compressor. Now, after owning the fridge for nearly 6 years, i started to hear the horrible clicking noise from my compressor...
I followed the easiest path on the repairing by putting a new starter relay after 4 hours of idling/power off.... Apparently, the solution did not work.
compressor kicks on.. click... buzz (abnormally high pitch) 10 secs...click (overload/over temp?)...

I have cleaned the coils and compressor area... I still have no luck.
I didn't have a multimeter. So I used my kill-a-meter outlet to measure the power and current draw from the fridge...
Without compressor...but evaporator fan is out... current reads 0.1A, 25 W...
After compressor click on... current is around 20A, 800W or higher...

I don't know what to do now? I assume it is a dead unit... freezer cools down to 40F only... what keeps it cool? the 10 sec humming during the starting period?
Should I try a 3 in 1 starter thing? I guess I can find that in the appliance part store... how much does it usually cost?

I don't know if I should invest more troubleshooting parts as I'm getting a new fridge going....

If its pulling more then what the label says on the compressor it sounds like its done kicked the bucket there as its pulling too much to try and turn itself over and run also replacing the cooling fan for it should help for the next one that gets installed on it you can try contacting Kenmore about it and they should help you with it

SOURCE: Refrigerator buzzes & clicks

The only thing a capacitor does is 'kick' the compressor to start it. There is a box on the compressor containing the start relay. If it is defective or dirty, it might buzz. With the power off, find it, remove its cover and use some canned air to blow off any dirt inside. If that doesn't fix it, replace it. If there is a fan down there, be careful...and be sure it is working.

I think the Tecumseh compressor

Hi,
Yes, this time I think your compressor is the problem. The buzzing is the compressor trying to start and because it is siezed up or the motor is not starting the windings get hot and the thermal cutout activates cutting off the power till it cools back down again.
Changing the compressor takes specialized equipment to evacuate and save the regfrigerant, change the compressor and then re-evacuate the system and recharge the unit.
Get a firm price for the whole job before you tell them to do the work. It may not be cost effective on some units to change the compressor.
I hope that this has helped you to solve you problem.

Thanks for using Fixya!

Yesterday started hearing a buzzing sound from the fridge. Came home today with a pool of water in the kitchen coming from the fridge. Opened the freezer, ice is melted and inside is relatively warm....

I would check for a bad starter relay first unless you can verify that the sound is comming from the compressor. How to check stuff> http://www.acmehowto.com/howto/appliance/refrigerator/refrigerator.php

Freezer and fridge not cold

Sounds like you have a stuck compressor. The buzz is the compressor trying to run but cannot.
A refrigeration mechanic with an hermetic compressor tester can reverse operate the compressor to get it unstuck

REFRIGERATOR IS MAKING A BUZZING SOUND, not cooling

You have one of two problems going on. Your fan is spinning at hitting the sides. Or your compressor is shot which seems to be more the problem and even though it is cold the humming sound is a warning for you that the compressor is shot and it is more affordable to replace the fridge then the compressor. Sometimes compressor can cost more then the fridge.

My Kenmore side by side refrigerator is not freezing nor cooling.

surfgl,

The model you posted does not help me much but a rough estimate would be (from Sears) about $400.00 for the compressor + about $225.00 Serv Call and Labor. Possibly another $15.00 access valve and then tax.
The problem you have is that the compressor is locking up then it may run again for a short time. It will eventually lock up and not run again. If you can prove it is (by receipt) that it is less than 5 years old, Sears will repair it free under the sealed system warranty.
The model # and serial # should be on a sticker in the top front of the ref section. If not then on the left wall or right wall top front of ref section.

If this helped please rate me good. supertechks

Kenmore (253.51399104)side by side making buzzing/humming noise

It will rattle slightly, this is normal. The ones that are burned out will sound like they have gravel in them, you can defininely tell something is wrong.
The problem with diagnosing Kenmore fridges with this problem is that there are different manufacturers. Yours is built by Frigidaire and probably has a Tecumseh compressor. We find more failed compressors with the Tecumsehs than we do with the models that have Embraco compressors. The models with Embraco's generally have more relay failures.

You should not hear the buzz/hum at startup. You will need to replace the compressor, which will be replaced at no charge to you if it is less than 5 yrs old.
If it is older than 5 yrs, you can have it replaced, but it will be almost as expensive as a new fridge. You can buy an aftermarket start device called a 3-in-1. This has a start capacitor built in to give it a little more boost on start up. I don't recommend using them unless it is a short term fix until the compressor can be replaced or if it is out of warranty and there is nothing to lose anyway.
Thanks/Mike

No cold in fridge or freezer: buzzing compressor

There is no start motor. If the brand of the compressor is a tecumpseh then it is most likely the problem and has a 5 yr warranty from the date of purchase. If it is an Embraco compressor I would try and overload and relay. They are all in one part sometimes called a start device.
