5 SECOND FROM COLD TO 2 RED LIGHTS

Just performed the X clip mod, used Artic Silver 5 and plugged in for test and board heating per the directions. 5 seconds after start up I go directly to 2 flashing red lights and shut down. I took it apart to correct 3 flashing red. Perhaps a mother board failure ? Has anyone seen this problem, no heat at all and two flashing reds ? Thanks

Tried loosening them the requested 1/2 turn, same issue, tried a little further, still the same. Can you think of anything else I may have missed ? Thanks for your help.

All I usually have to do is unscrew all the screws a little bit, take out the small black screws, and then it works fine. Also make sure that you didn't tighten the screws on the X-Clamp fix too tight. It puts too much pressure on your GPU and it might force it to False Overheat. You want to hand-tighten the screws on the X-Clamp first, then screw then in a half a turn.

You tightened the screws on the motherboard too tight. Unscrew each screw 1/2 a turn until it doesn't do it anymore. The screws are so tight that they ground out the motherboard to the metal casing. Also, do not put the small black screws in.

My xbox always suddenlly shut down while im playing it will not reach 20 minutes its shuts down again.

If before it shutdowns it has 2 red light its a Overheating issue, if still under warrenty send it back to microsoft or... you can, open it up by following this guide: . http://www.rrodfix.com/how-to-take-apart-the-microsoft-xbox-360-game-console.html Stop once you've removed the dvd drive. Get a can of air, make sure its all aired out, and you hold the can horizontal don't tilt it, and short bursts. Once thats done. If you want to make sure it never overheats you can do whats called a 12v mod on the 360 it forces the fans to run at full speed. Now if you have a slim you just snip the grey wire. If its a older model you get the fans, and wire it up to a external 12v 1amp ac to dc adapter or solder it to this point :http://www.llamma.com/xbox360/mods/360-12V-fan-Mod.htm this link also shows what wires are postive and negative. And I would also suggest changing the thermal paste out for some better stuff like artic silver five. Now if you're getting Red Ring of Death which is 3 red lights you need to follow this guide :This is called Red Ring of Death or RROD by the community, it means that the CPU or GPU or both have a bad solder joint, that is caused from rapid heating and cooling from poor cooling design of the xbox 360. To fix it is pretty simple. Follow these instructions to take apart your 360: http://www.rrodfix.com/how-to-take-apart-the-microsoft-xbox-360-game-console.html Stop once you've removed the dvd drive. Now Remove the fans from the back, and set them on the heatsink on the right the flat one, and make sure they are pointing where the air is going up. Put a peice of of carboard or plastic something non conductive in between the heatsinks to prevent airflow from the fans. Turn on the 360, and leave it til it goes from 3 rings to 2 rings, wait 3 minutes, then switch the fan over to the other side. Wait about as long as you did for the other one then turn off the 360. Wait 1 hour for the 360 to cool off. DO NOT move the 360 while it is cooling down durning this period or you will permantly ruin it, the solder is being reflowed. After an hour, put the fans back, and turn the 360 on, it should work. Once its working, I recommend doing a 12 volt mod on the fans to prevent RROD from happening again, and changing out the thermal paste with artic silver 5.

I had the red ring of death and fixed my xbox 360 a couple of times with removing the heat sinks and appling silver artic 5 and restarting ...this time I turn it on and get green lights and the fan goes on...

This Is caused by one of the two heat sinks not
making full contact to the tops of the chips.

It is likely that when you screwed down the heat sink
you got a slight gap and the heatsink compound
seeped away from the gap creating a air pocket.

Open the console and tilt the C.P.U's heatsink from side to
side as you turn it on and you should find a sweet spot
where the fan speed will start to drop. If that's the case
then simply remove and reinstall ,making sure its flush
with the chips

The second problem is the Internal thermocouple connection
under the G.P.U. has a open connection . in witch case you
will need to have the G.P.U. reflowed ( resolder ) back to the
board.

if you have any questions feel free to ask.

3 red lights fan works for a few seconds then stops.

If adjusting the screws on the heat sinks and using different size washers does not fix the problems you will need to reflow the motherboard. The absolute best reflow is performed using a rework station, although these are so expensive they are out of the realm of most hobbyists. I have a repair shop with a station if you want to be sure. I'll give you instructions on a possibly cheaper alternative, I fixed a bunch using this method when I first started way back in the early Xbox days.

You can also reflow using an oven or a heat gun. I've had better success with the heat gun.
The goal here is to heat the chips to about 260 C, the problem with the heat gun is it is a very imprecise method... Surprisingly though if done correctly it can work quite well. I must warn you though that if done incorrectly it could damage the MB beyond repair. I will give instructions below, let me know if you have any questions.

Essentially you will need to cover the outside of the board, including all the plastic capacitors with 5-10 layers of thick tin foil. You want to leave the CPU, GPU, RAM chips, and southbridge exposed for reflow. Put the foil on gently so as not to bend the capacitors, but firmly enough so it does not get blown off by the heat gun. Put the motherboard on a flat non-flammable surface.
Take your heat gun and start on low holding the heat gun about 4-5 inches away from the board. You cannot bump into or touch the motherboard during this process, you are basically liquefying the solder balls in between the SMDs. If you bump the board it will seriously mess it up so be careful.
You will want to move in a circular motion heating the board up evenly, do not stop moving the heatgun in the horizontal circular motion above the motherboard during this whole process. Do this for 2 minutes, then switch the heatgun to high and continue for 3 minutes, then switch back to low and go for 2 minutes. Keep the heatgun moving across the top of the board the whole time about 4-5 inches away. After you are done let the board sit for about an hour. Reassemble and test it out! Hopefully you will be greeted by the wonderful green lights! Haha.
Sorry this would be easier if I could post pictures.
Please let me know if you have any questions and good luck!

2 red light error heatsinks wont heat up

2 red flashing lights means your console overheated you just needed to let it cool and or check the fans and other cooling components, and by the sounds of it not heating up you have cooked the chips by trying to fix it so you console is basically a paper weight now, sorry

Graphics messing up, locking up at load screens

This happens a lot which is then i followed by the 3 red rings(red rings of death). is what you need to do is open your'e console, their are help video's on U tube for this. Once your is console open and you have the mother board taken out you need to remove the heat sinks which are on top of the chips. just un-snap the x clamps (on the bottom of the motherboard) and take off the heat sinks. unscrew the tabs on the bottom of the heats sinks and take them out. now take one of the heat sinks to a hardware store and find 8 screws about an inch long that screw into the heat sinks, also buy 16 plastic washers and 8 metal washers that fit onto the screws.also trey to find a BUTANE Torch this will save you from the expensive heatguns and work just as good. the last thing you need is Artic Silver 5 which can be found for 5 bucks on ebay. now once you have this you need to lay your motherboard on a flat imflammable area. light the torch and make shure it is on the LOWEST setting and that the flame is about 3/4 inch long and make a sort on hissing sound. make shure the top ofthe chips are cleaned with a paper towl of the paste. start with the torch about 3 inches over a chip and keep it moving with a sweeping motion after about 30 seconds start to get close but not to close about an inch an a half away and keep making sweeping and circular movements for about 2 min. do not get to close. now move to the next chip and do the same thing. now after ur done with the chips move the torch away about 3inches and keep heat on both chips for another minute and let them cool for a total of 10 to 15 minutes. once they are cool to the touch clean off the metal parts of the chips with alcohol (I preffer acitone too) make shure they have a mirror like finish and put a very little glob of the artic silver on the metal chips and evenly flaten it out till it covers them evenly, make shure to apply enough! ( i used the side of a allen wrench, its less messy). now on the bottom of both heat sinks, clean them off with acitone or alcohol and scrub them very firmly to get off the grime from the paste. now put one plastic washer on each screw and insert them through the bottom of the holes surrounding the chips flip the mother board over and put the other 8 plastic washers on the screws and on top of these put on the 8 metal washers. then put the heat sinks on and tighten them down. once you put the mother board in the metal casing, plug it in(dont fully essmble it yet) now test out your xbox by pressing the little button on the ring of lights board and let it boot up a usual. If it works then ur done, but if 3 red lights start blinking or two red light start blinking you need to ajust the 8 screws. through the 8 holes in the bottom of the metal casing stick a small srewdriver in there and make shure they are all snug but not to tight and then loosin each one about an 1/8 of a turn till there just a little loose. keep testing and adjusting the screws till it boots up with the green lights.
THIS WILL REPAIR 3RED LIGHTS,FREEZING,NO VIDEO, 2 red LIGHTS. in most cases 1 RED LIGHT will be fixed

GO TO A HARDWARE STORE FIND THE FOLLOWING THINGS IF YOU DONT HAVE THEM
16 platic washers
8 metal washers(make shure all the washers fit snuggly around the screws and are very thin)
8 screws about an inch long that fit heat sinks
Butane blow torch, just a small one will do
small torx wrench kit. big and small flat and phillips head screwdrivers
