How to write a post to help get a better chance of a solution.
In order to write a post to maximize your chances of obtaining the best solution possible you will need to post as much information as possible about the product and a detailed description of the problem you are having as possible. This will save you time because an expert or member posting a solution can find the needed information about your product to post a solution without having to ask for clarification.
The first thing you should do is write what it is you need help with in the title section of the post, for example: "My dvd player will not power on." Make the information in the title to the point and as short as possible.
The next thing you will need to include in your post is a description of the product it is you are having problems, for example: "I have a Phillips dvd player, model number qvc987, serial number dn1478963". It is very important that you include the product name/brand name, the model number, and even a serial number when ever possible. You should be able to find this information posted some where on your device, usually on the back side of it on a sticker or some other label.
Once you have included the product information, you are now ready to post a detailed description of the problem. You should include as much detailed information as you can provide, for example: How long you have had the product and when the problem began, The product made out of the ordinary noises before it stopped working and include for how long and describe the sound, The product had a funny smell like something was burnt or burning right before or just after the problem began, You heard a popping noise when the problem began, You dropped or was rough with the product before the product started having problems, You saw horizontal lines on the tv screen when you first turned it on and the lines will not go away, You felt an electrical shock when you had the device on before it stopped working, etc.
When providing the detailed information, include your senses in the description:
1. Vision- What did or do you see (if anything)?
2. Smell- What do or did you smell (if anything)?
3. Hear- What did do or did you hear (if anything)?
4. Feel- What did or do you feel (if anything)?
Provide as much details about what the product is doing or what problem it is having, for example:
I turned my television set on this morning and all of sudden, I heard a high pitched buzzing noise and then I saw lots of horizontal white lines going up and down the screen before the tv shut down completely. I turned the tv off and then turned it back on and now the tv will not show any picture at all, but I can still hear static noises coming through the speakers. I also noticed that just after the buzzing noise, it smelt like something was burning. The power buttons seem to be still on because the power light is will still come on. The back of the television felt a little warmer than normal, so I turned it off and unplugged it from the outlet. The tv was working normally the day before.
Notice in the example above, I included all of the senses that I experienced about the problem, when and where I experienced those senses in relation to the device, and a rough time frame during my experience.
Another great option is to include a photo of the problem if you have a digital camera and can upload pictures to your computer from it, you can take a picture of the problem, save it in your computer, then upload it in your post. This will give experts/members posting a solution a great advantage to help provide you with a more concise solution. If you are not sure where the picture icon is, just look at the top of the post and you will see icons for removing format, Bold, Italics, Underline, the globe with a chain for adding links, next a picture of a tree is the picture icon, next is the you tube icon for providing videos, then two more ways to add links, and last is spell check in this exact order.
Another thing to remember is to describe as best you can and in as much detail as possible any of those senses. This is very important when describing things you see or hear related to the problem.
Posting information like this will in most cases give a member information that will help them determine what or where the problem is or the component causing the problem. Rough time frames will also help a member determine what a possible cause is because it will tell them if this has been an ongoing problem (intermittent) or if it suddenly just happened.
After you have typed out your problem make sure you use the spell check option located at the top of the post. This will be really helpful if you are not a very good typist (like myself) to correct any errors in your typing so that you have a clear post that is not confusing to the reader.
Now that you have included your detailed description you are ready to post the problem, but you will need to make sure that you put the product you are having in the proper category. This will help members that specialize in that product, quickly find your problem, so remember to use the category selection box to place your product in the appropriate category. Now you can post your problem by clicking the post button.
I just have one more thing to cover and that is if you receive a solution from a member and it helped you out or didn't, please provide a rating according to the quality of the solution and if it was helpful or not to you. Remember that a lot of the solutions are free and did not cost you a service charge (unless you have a paid membership) like getting some of this advice from a technician would, so please be kind and give the proper rating. Believe it or not, the person posting the solutions does appreciate it and did take the time and effort to help you.
