Check lamp cooling fan for dust blockage. It is located inside the back cover (10 screws) and is in a horizontal position above the lamp from the rear side. This is an air intake fan. The cooling fan you can see on the back panel is the exhaust fan that sucks out the hot air. A clue is hot or melt marks around the lamp housing.
If the lamp cooling fan is blocked you'll get red flashing diagnostics light flashing. It's trying to say clean me so I can keep the new lamp cool. Sony is silent on this in it's manuals. I'm guessing they don't care because is causes lot's of parts business!
I learned all this after replacement lamp burnt out after 1 week. My lamp cooling intake fan was found blocked and wasn't spinning. I saw the exhaust fan working and thought all was ok, not even knowing there were more fans. Some models even have another fan inside the optics blocker. I didn't take mine apart that far.
Yes my unit was like that after about less thank five minutes the pic would go away when you do replace the bulb make sure you dont lay the bulb slanted that makes the pic dark has to be standing straight in there easy to replace

If you bought a lamp from eBay then its most likely not a real brand bulb. The PT-AE1000 uses an ET-LAE1000 lamp that should have an Osram, Philips or Matsushita brand bulb. If you do not see PVIP, M or UHP on the bulb then its most likely your problem. Cheap lamps are not worth the money. They fail early and end up costing you more money in the long run. These folks sell lamps that always work. I would return the eBay lamp and buy one that will work. Their support and customer service are one of the best in the industry.

You will have too replace the lamp, I have the same tv. The lamp costs around $200- they forgot to tell me the lamp runs on a timer and then when the time is up it goes and will need to be replaced. My tv is 3 years old and I am about to order my third lamp. Just remember after you replace the lamp that you go to the menu and "reset" the timer or it will not work even with a new lamp- all a money game
1. Projector lamps use customized ballasts that ignite the lamp
by charging it with a higher voltage in the ignition phase and then
dropping down to a lower running voltage once the circuit is created.
2. Projector lamps CANNOT
be tested with an AMP or OHM meter. Projector lamps function by
igniting ultra-high pressurized mercury vapor across an ARC tube. At
the point where the mercury vapor resides there is no conductive
electrical material and therefore testing a projector lamp with an AMP
or OHM will not work.
