Camera freezes in any picture taking mode

My camera will only turn on in PC or playback mode. Once I put the camera in any picture taking mode, I can hear the lens adjust a little and then the camera freezes. I can't turn it off, zoom in or out, switch back to PC or playback mode, and the LCD screen turns black. Right now I am stuck with the lens out and I have to remove the battery to turn the camera off. I've tried using other compatible batteries and memory cards. Nothing works. Any suggestions?
