Th ribon cables dont need to return to exactly th same port as it came out of ..if u look at th hard drive from th top with th pins facing u make sure th red strip on th edge of th ribbon is on th right,, closest to th middle then plug th other end in th coloured port on th motherboard (usually blue) plug th power cable in next to th ribbon on th hard drive.. thassit.!! absolutely make sure that b4 u touch anything inside th computer to ground ur static electricity on summing metal 1st..or wear a anti static wrist band.. if this is ignored th chances of blowing th components are immense..

Turned computer on and monitor instantly goes to sleep, also cant turn off the computer using button.have to use switch on power supply

Try this, unplug everything from the other board except the main hard drive, power connections, and monitor. if it does not come up, remove ram cards, leaving one stick. try again, if it is still bad swap ram sticks. If after all of this it still does not work you have a bad motherboard or processor

Bad motherboard or power supply which fries motherboard

Gateway hasn't had any recalls on it that I know of. maybe it is not the mother board. It might be the hard drive. Hard drives can do that aswell. When I fix a computer the first thing I check is the hard drive. A little bit of advice with computers. Start with the small things first and work Your way up to the big stuff. Hope that helps.

    Wont start up

well from my experience the little colored wires are the power supply they go to box with all the other wires that look just like it will go to cdrom or dvdrom they only go on one way the wide multi wire goes to hard drive this looks just like the ones that go to your cdrom. they could be different thickness some have twice the wire's the big key is the multi ribbon has a color wire on one side that the side that faces the power line. first you need to boot in to bios by what ever your computer tell's you to do. once your in bios look and see if it lists your hard drive. if it lists it as your secondary drive on your primary socket you need to unplug the thick cable at the hard drive and plug it back into the other connector on the same ribbon. on really old computer's than run windows 95 you would have a real little 3 or 4 wire connection that goes from the HD to a spot on the mother board.

Hard drive compatible with gateway 300xl desktop computer

I think there is no SATA ports on its mother board. So SATA Hard disks cannot be used on this system.

Without any dobt you can use PATA (the one that we used to see everywhere) can be used. There is no question of compatibility; any size 80,or 160 GB or even more can be used.

I wanted to know whether ASUS A7S266-VM/U2 will support seagate 7200.10

M/Boards support all makes of hard drive
Are you sure you connected it correctly
The wide ribbon cable that goes in the rear of hard drive should
    1) Be connected to M/board in the No 1 connector with the stripe on cable to the No 1 pin
    2) the stripe on cable should go next to the 4 pin power plug on hard drive
Also ensure your BIOS is set to Auto detect of driives

Not really, it could be the LCD ribbon, LCD inverter. Also does the system power up? Like does the fan spin? And is there a Hard Drive in it or not, Sometimes the Hard Drive pin connector will do that. " Not The Hard Drive, Part that Hard Drive Pins plug into" If you want me to see about fixing it for you, you can send it to me and I'll see about fixing it. I mostly get trouble with Screens from the Gateway Brand they mostly have the LCD Issues. But I do mainly repair for IBM ThinkPads but also do other brands aswell.
IBM, DELL, Compaq, HP, Gateway, Toshiba, Sony, Acer, emachines and fujitsu. All you will have to pay is shipping.
    Thanks...
