Question about DVD & Blu-Ray Players

DIGITAL ANALOG CONNECTION

Hello from Australia. I've bought a very sophisticated DVD player and recorder by Panasonic. It's the Panasonic DMR-EXS88. Unfortunately I don't have a digital television to go with it but only an analog. It's a Rank Arena model and it's 30 years old. Don't get me wrong as it's set up now the picture quality is very good to excellent but it lacks a little depth. The High Definition channels are not available but I can live with that. The color white, is exaggerated and is very bright. Because of the antiquated TV there's no audio in and video in so I've used a very good LG video player and it's audio and video ins.I've tried to adjust the color and the contrast on the TV but it's difficult to get things just right. Is there a way I can improve the picture quality? Or do I need a new TV? Let me know. Thanks sabojams

The quality of the TV by itself is very good to excellent.
    No problem.

If the tv is showing the same worse quality without connecting any external device.then its the tv problem.and new tv is much advisable.

Hi and welcome again to FixYa,

Initially, I would recommend purchase of a new unit. The Rank Arena model in the past years of use would have given you full service but it has reached a point that there are no practical methods of rejuvenating a 30 year old TV. While it is true that there are video processors and amplifiers that you can tweak and improve the video signal, more often than not, they would require constant trimming and adjustment to suit your need/taste. For practical purposes, a replacement high end TV model to match your sophisticated DVD Player/Recorder would be right.

Just a start, do postback how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

Yes, a set top box is the only option, other than
buying a new recorder with a digital (ATSC) tuner,
which won't be on the market in the U.S. before
next month.
In fringe areas a signal booster can sometimes help.

Thnx.

How do you re-tune the panasonic DMR E85H DVD Recorder. I have done exactly as it says in the manual and still it does not find any channels? Is it digital?

The tuner in the DMR-58H is a NTSC tuner (analog). Unless you have a low power station in your area, you will need a digital-to-analog converter box to record OTA stations. It can record analog cable without a box as well. (Digital cable will require a box.)

The manual for the DMR-E85H is available from Panasonic here: http://service.us.panasonic.com/OPERMANPDF/DMRE85H.pdf .

I hope this helps.

Cindy Wells
(at least in my area there is only one station broadcasting an analog signal; it is a low-power transmitter and thus wasn't required to upgrade to digital with the rest of the stations.)

Can my Analog reciver Panasonic DMR-EH 75 v be converted to a digital reciever

I bought a set-top converter box from Dish Network, which will operate with the DMR-EH75V through the remote control cable that was provided with the recorder. It tunes in all the available digital channels and uses the RCA A/V cables to connect to IN1 on the back of the recorder. TVGOS is now provided through channel 2.1 (CBS) in our area and it also provides the time signal that keeps the recorder's clock updated. NOTE: ONLY the Dish Network boxes work with these functions. I've had occasional issues with the box after some period - a few weeks - it needs to be rebooted or reset to manual and then back to automatic (which causes it to reboot anyway.) Model no is DTV PAL PLUS.

Did you get anywhere with this? I have a similar problem with a DVD/PVR from Woxter. I've tried different cables and changed many of the settings without luck. I've seen a couple of posts which suggest changing country and sound settings (to PCM), so I'll check them out before I call in a repairman to check out the circuitry around the sound output.

Can the Panasonic DMR-EH55 be made to receive digital channels? e.g. via a digital capable TV or a set top box? If not, I suspect it will be obsolete when analogue channels cease this year (in Australia)

If you receive your channels through your local cable company, nothing will change. The DMR-EH55 will continue to work normally.
If you receive your channels with your rooftop antenna you'll need a Digital to Analog TV Converter Box. The unit itself will not receive digital signals directly.
