Hello adrianpcoope, If you have a xboxlive account i would suggest "recovering your profile" you should be able to access your profiles from there. Xbox put out a patch awhile back that addresses this issue.
Hope it works, if it doesn't write here and let me know.

I have the xbox hook up to my t.v. and they are saying i have to many profiles how do i get rid of the profiles that are on the xbox now

Go to:
>Settings (tab furthest to the right on the Dashboard)
>HDD (if that's where you save your gamer profiles; if not, choose one of the other options that may be listed to select your storage device)
>Gamer Profiles
From there, you can see exactly how many profiles you have and there should be an on-screen prompt that should tell you how to delete them (I think you have to hit Y).

Deleting your gamer profiles may result in the loss of saved game data and achievements linked to them unless the profiles are backed up in the Cloud via Xbox LIVE or on an external storage device.

I hope this helps you out.

When I turn on my xbox its says that there are no profiles, when I have 5 profiles on my hard drive. Why will the Xbox not read the profiles on my hard drive?

You need to go into settings and reformat will lose all saved data, but you will not have to buy a new one. We actually had to do it last night and it sucked, but the xbox is working now!! Any gamer tags you have online you can put back onto the xbox. It's really, really annoying but it will save you the money of buying a new hard drive that you would still lose all the data on anyway.

Can't make more than one profile on my xbox360

What you need to do to ceate a new profile is sign out of all active profiles and press the Xbox button in the centre of the control, which will bring up the menu screen, if you have no active profiles signed in, there will be an option to create a profile.
Good luck.

Deleting user profiles

It's pretty easy. Just take the XMB all the way to the left side where the profiles are at. Hit the triangle button and a couple of options will come up. one of them will be "delete profile". It'll tell you that all that profiles saved data will be lost. Just accept that & wave good-bye!

Lost all acheivements both profiles and nothing will save

Hey that sucks. You could try to call 18004MYXBOX if you had LIVE and they may be able to recover your profile also go to the system blade and pick memory Press Y on the hard drive symbol and then press X,X,Left Bumper, Right Bumper, X,X. Once you do this a messsage will appear saying: Do you want to perform maintenance on your Xbox 360 storage devices? Hit yes If no sometimes things will actually say corrupted data
