Hi,My kids decided to ride our little tikes coupe down the stairs! Of course the back axle popped out. I tried to hammer it back in but I stopped when I felt that I was applying to much force. Is there a way to remove the classic end of axle piece, insert the axle and then return the cap securely? ThanksDavid

Re: Car Axle popped out
Yes, you need a new axle nut that goes on the end of the axle. You can find them at your home improvement store for about .50.
Remove the old one and hammer the new one on when you get the axle on.

Ok! I can relate to all the frustration. I happened to get into a similar situation with one of the axle caps. Though it looked impossible at first look, it actually is not that tough. Here is a 3 step solution - Tools needed: Hammer, Screwdriver (flat head) Steps to remove: 1) Cut open the red cap to expose the metal cap that is stuck. Observe: If you closely look at the cap, there are two slits along its circumference. These slits are the ones which are locking the cap to the metal rod. 2) Hold the screwdriver to the base of one of the slits and hammer it down so that the slits loosen the grip. The **** would give way. Repeat this step for the other ****. 3) Now, hold the screw driver horizontally under the metal cap's lip (like how you would hold a filing rod to sharpen a kitchen knife) and gently knock off the cap by tapping the screwdriver with the hammer. Hope this helps :)
This link: http://www.littletikes.com/consumerservice/ReplacementParts-detail.aspx?Product_ID=2485&
shows which replacement parts are available from Little Tikes, and I don't see the one you're looking for. I tried to call their Consumer Services line at 1-800-321-0183, but they're open M-F from 8 am to 8 pm and Sat 9 am to 2 pm, EST. Please give them a call tomorrow.
An alternative might be to take the piece to a hardware store and see if they have anything that might work as a replacement.
Hope this helps!
The caps are a type of "acorn nut". Check a local hardware store (not the big guys) for this type of fastener and bring the shaft with you to get the correct size. These should not cost more than about $.50 each.
