If your laptop appears to boot up and the hard disk LED flashes, then the problem is probably a back light fault. This can be a faulty inverter or a faulty CCFL lamp. Please click on this link and follow my instructions to identify the fault and possible fix :- http://www.fixya.com/support/r3598095-faulty_laptop_lcd_screen

When i turn on my laptop i get loading pbr for descriptor 2 done ntldr is missing on dell vostro 1700

This is saying that the ntldr, which is a file necessary to start windows is missing.
You will need to follow one of these steps in the links, below:
Note, if you have Windows Vista or Windows 7, you'll need to boot from the Windows system disk and follow the prompts to repair Windows

Bought used dell vostro 1700, wasnt told about the bios password.

Hi Jonnymac93,
the fastest way to clear a password would be to remove the cmos / bios battery. The manual for the Vostro 1700 can be found at the following link;
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/vos1700/en/OM/pdf/TT565A01MR.pdf
If you prefer the manual in htm, click this next link & choose htm format listed on the site;
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/vos1700/en/index.htm
Go to page 182 & 183 for instructions. The manual call this, Removing the Coin-Cell Battery.

Also here is notebooks driver site for the 1700;
http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/my_systems_info/manuals?~ck=ln&c=us&l=en&lnki=0&s=gen

Good luck Johnny!
Run into trouble, post back.

Dell Vostro 1700 won't startup - woman in need of help!!! :'(

Don't choose safe mode.

If you have in the F8 options, a Recovery Console select that and run at the command prompt:

chkdsk /r

That will look for and repair disk errors.

Otherwise, look for and select Restore my computer, from this F8 menu.

Failing that you will need a copy of Vista or XP but if you have a 64bit OS like Vista64 you will need a copy of that.

Let me know what happens. But, I won't be online for much longer so I'll send a message to a friend of mine in Ireland who can help you further since he's in a different time zone.

Regards,
Worldvet
