New ADSL Modem on Windows 2000 Generates Error 692

ADSL modem connected to a Windows 2000 PC network card. This is a firsttime install. Previously, only a router and regular modems had beenconfirmed on this PC.

All 3 lights are on but when doing settings -> control panel ->adsl I get:

Error 692: There was a hardware failure in the modem (or other connecting device) windows 2000 ethernet

The phone company exchanged the modem once saying it was bad. New one has the same problem.

  • I've been told that if all 3 lights are on it's more likely an ISP issue. Any suggeestonis? Both phone support
  • MS has some suggestions on their web site but none fit the bill: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/122839/EN-US/#appliesto
Modem details:

I suspect there's some confusion in the setup as to whether the device is acting as a modem or as a router since I think it can be both. In the latter case, there shouldn't be any dialing necessary at all. The fact that all 3 lights are on when turned on would lead to this direction. If this is so, I just need to do a LAN connection setup with which I'm familiar.

You posted userid/pw combinations. Is there a standard IP? I was told 10.0.0.38 for this device.

I'm actually trying to help my son out on this. I thought I'd get to him yesterday but it won't be until later in the week. And then I can see the installation manual, too. :)

    Thanks.... Steve

2. Make sure there are not multiple modems installed.
3. Uninstall and reinstall the modem.

Not able to access the modem's home page, try these combinations:

    user: admin
    pass: leave blank

    user: root
    pass: leave blank

    user: admin
    pass: admin

    user: root
    pass: root

    user: admin
    pass: root

    user: root
    pass: admin

These are commonly used default username/password combinations for routers/modems...

Internet connection error 734 extra initialization command does not work.it leads to another error 692.

692 - Hardware failure in port or attached device.
This behavior can occur if any of the following conditions exists:
  • The modem is turned off or malfunctioning.
  • If you have an external modem, the serial cable is incorrectly wired.
  • If you have an external modem, the serial cable is not securely connected or has open connections.
  • The serial port or multiport adapter on the RAS server or client is malfunctioning.
  • The handshaking options for the modem are incorrectly configured.
  • The modem is unsupported, or the chosen emulation may be incorrect.
  • The modem .inf files become corrupted or the modem driver becomes corrupte
To solve this problem, use the appropriate method:
  • Reset your modem. Consult the documentation for information about how to reset the modem.
  • If you have an external modem, make sure that you are using the correct serial cable. For more information about requirements for proper cabling, refer to the "Cabling Requirements" section in Dial-Up Networking Help.
  • If you have an external modem, make sure that the serial cable is connected securely.
  • If you are using a pin adapter to connect your external modem to your serial port, make sure that the pin adapter is wired properly for modem communication. For example, a 9- to 25-pin adapter for a mouse does not work properly with an RAS serial setup.
  • Test the serial port or multiport adapter, and replace the adapter if necessary.
  • Make sure that the handshaking options for the modem are configured properly. Consult the documentation for information about the different handshaking options that are available for your modem.
  • Contact the modem manufacturer to see if any setup and initialization information is available for your modem. Also, check the latest Windows hardware compatibility list (HCL) to make sure that your modem is supported.
  • Use Device Manager to remove the modem. You can do this in safe mode or in normal mode. Restart the computer in normal mode. Windows will redetect the modem and reinstall the correct drivers.

Can you try reset the network card and also reset the modem by pressing into the little hole on it for like 30 seconds? To reset the network adapter card, you can right click on the network connection of your LAN connection and click on diagnose if you are using Windows Vista. Then you will see the reset network adapter card option. Or you can follow the steps on the following link.

If you are using Windows 7, then the following link will include the steps about troubleshooting your network adapter card.
