Question about Quasar SP-3234 TV

A 1/4 in Color line across the center of a black screen

A couple of days ago I turned on my daughter's Quasar Color TV and received a black screen with a 1/4 in horizontal band across the center of the display. The audio was normal and the band was flickering in color.
She had travelled from Washington, D.C. to Reno, NV towing a U-Haul loaded with personal belongings including the TV.
The TV was connected to a Direct TV satellite cable signal via a satellite receiver and A/ V cables. The TV seems to respond to the front-mounted Volume, Channel and TV/Video buttons, but the narrow band is the only video and, except for the flickering, doesn't change.
A primary HD TV and Direct TV receiver from the same satellite in the other room functions properly.
I wonder if the TV is repairable and and wether it is cost effective given the age of the unit (mfg date is June 2001). I live in the Reno, NV area.

The original solution response asks me to confirm the product Model WHICH IS: SP-3234E and NOT SP-3243 as reported by your responder.
Also I would like a specific repair and cost estimate to help me decide wether or not to proceed with the repair.

I don't understand the response from Solutions by pankaj_dic:
"this is the power problem check the voltage settings"
What power Problem & check what voltage settings?
Also, my requests for specific problem description and estimate of repair costs not answered.
Please refund my fee, since I am not receiving specifics I requested.

Sounds to me like there is a strong possibility that the power supply is going out on it. You might consider calling around to get estimates from local TV repair shops. However, you're absolutely right...depending on the size of the TV, what kind of TV it is, and how much it would cost to replace it as opposed to repairing it, you may end up deciding to just let it go and purchasing a new one. I wouldn't make that decision before getting an actual inspection on the set, though.Given the fact that the TV is going on 8 years old, it sounds like you have gotten your money's worth out of it, but it still might not be a lost cause to get it checked out. Hope this helps and have a great day!

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, your post describes a vertical deflection failure. This would normally involve a single IC. Pls confirm that you have a Quasar SP-3243 TV unit.

Just a start, do postback how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

Thank you for the information that your unit is a Quasar SP-3234E. As originally suspected, the most likely suspect would be the vertical IC. In most versions this would be LA7838 or any of its variations. LA7838 is a small single-inline IC of 7 pins. It would normally be attached to an aluminum heat sink. It is often found relatively close to the flyback. Part cost would be roughly USD10 max. Service fee would depend on the going rate in your are.

Why did my Quasar TV (1993) picture go out again, blue line across the screen? We had it repaired, 3 months later no picture, same blue line.

Sounds to me like something else is causing those parts to fail. It should be under warranty but depends on the repair shop. Why not just buy a new one.

Here are some choices for a new one:

Screen black no sound or picture with line in center

this is a common problem, the vertical hold has been damaged.dont leave the teli. on,the white line will burn the middle of the screen and leave a black mark. You need a new integrated circuit(i.c.) for vertical hold.

Black screen, high pitched squeal

A set that has only a 1/2 inch bright line through the middle of the picture, from left to right, has a vertical output IC that is not working correctly. If the 1/2 inch line is in the middle but going up and down, then the horizontal yoke circuit has stopped working. These are problems which should be looked at by a qualified tech, but if the set was purchased 6 months ago then it should still be under the manufacturer's warranty.
