The page should be absolutely new.and the scanner glass should be absolutely cleaned.and 1 main thing u replaced your black cartridge.but if your colour cartridge is empty it will not accept the allignment complete thing.it will show allignment failed as the particular colour is missing in your allignment sheet which is required to get the allignment complete.

Got the C5180 from a relative because it didn't work. I tried a new black ink tank, it doesn't print anything in black. Color print looks weak and washed out without black for shadow, and black...

The printed output is fuzzy, blurry, or grainy, or the edges of objects in the images are jagged. Solution Follow these steps until the issue is resolved. Step one: Check your paper
  • Many papers have printing and non-printing sides. Load the paper with the printing side down.
  • Use the correct paper type for the project. For everyday documents, plain paper works well. For documents with dense printing, such as high-contrast graphics or photographs, use HP Advanced paper for the best results.
  • If these steps do not help, try a different paper. Ink might not bleed as easily on heavier paper. Paper that does not accept ink well is also prone to bleeding and smearing. HP designs its inks and papers to work together.
Step two: Check the settings
  1. In the program being used for printing, click File , and then click Print . The Print window opens.
  2. Make sure the appropriate product is selected, and then click Preferences or Properties . The Preferences/Properties window opens.
  3. Click the Printing Shortcuts tab. Consider modifying some or all of the options in the Printing Shortcuts menu to increase print quality.
    • Print quality : If the quality of the printouts is not acceptable, try increasing the print quality. To print more quickly, try decreasing the print quality.
    • Paper type : If one of the options matches the paper type exactly, select it instead of Automatic .
    • Paper size : Make sure that this option matches the paper loaded in the product.
To see additional options, click the Advanced tab, and then click Advanced Features . The Advanced Features window opens. Consider changing the following option: Ink volume : Adjust the amount of ink that prints on a page. For lighter images (less ink), drag the slider to the left. For darker images (more ink), drag the slider to the right. The lighter the ink volume, the more quickly the printout dries.
Step three: Check image resolution Make sure that the image file has enough resolution for the size of the printed picture. Although many photo applications can enlarge an image or part of an image to any size, eventually the individual pixels become visible and the whole image looks blurry. Here are some general guidelines for image file resolutions:
  • 94 pixels per cm (240 pixels per inch) for images to print on smaller format photo paper, such as 10 x 15 cm (4 x 6 inch)
  • 117 pixels per cm (300 pixels per inch) or higher for larger format photo papers
  • Lower resolutions might produce acceptable images when printed on rough-textured paper
Step four: Align the cartridges If the previous steps have not improved the appearance of the printout, align the cartridges. See the user guide for alignment instructions.

Printer displays "align cartridges" but every time I try to align the cartridges, it starts printing and then says printing cancelled and it stops aligning/printing. how do I fix this?

There are several reasons why the HP All-in-One may fail to align the cartridges. The most common reason is an ink cartridge that has one of the following problems:
One of the ink cartridges is low or out of ink. Black and all three colors must be available.
The paper has already been printed on or is colored paper.
Protective tape on a new ink cartridge has not been removed.
Contacts on the ink cartridge are not meeting the contacts in the carriage correctly.
Cartridge is remanufactured or refilled. Refilled or remanufactured ink cartridges may have been damaged during the refilling process or have clogged ink nozzles.
The ink cartridge is defective.
Follow the steps below to resolve the problem:
Step one: Examine the paper the alignment page was printed on
The alignment page must be printed on clean plain paper of either letter or A4-size and that has a brightness level (as printed on the paper package) of at least 85. Colored papers or paper that already has printing on it will cause the alignment to fail.
Step two: Does the alignment page print correctly
On the HP PSC 900 series, if the page ejects immediately or a "Paper mismatch" or "Paper too narrow" message appears, the 4 x 6 paper tray selector located on the paper output tray is pushed forward. Move the selector all the way back toward the front on the HP All-in-One.
Look at the alignment pages that have printed. Compare the alignment page to those included in the " images of alignment pages " section at the bottom of this document.
If any of the colors or the black is missing, faded, or streaked on the alignment page, there is a ink cartridge problem. Click here (buu02176) (in English) to learn how to correct ink cartridge related problems.
Step three: Perform a ink cartridge cleaning procedure
The ink cartridge cleaning process can be performed even with the alignment message showing in the display. Follow the steps below to perform an ink cartridge cleaning process from the front panel:
On the front panel, press Menu or Setup (depending on the model).
Press the Right Arrow (>) until Maintenance or Tools appears, and then press the Enter or OK .
Clean ink Cartridges should appear in the display. Press Enter or OK to begin the cartridge cleaning process.
A page will be printed during the cleaning process with all of the colors on it. If any of the colors or the black are missing, faded, or streaked on the alignment page, there is a ink cartridge problem.
Step four: Try to align the page again
HP products have two methods for aligning the ink cartridges, fully-automatic and semi-automatic. The steps are different for each type. Refer to the information below to determine which alignment method your product uses.
Automatic - these products use a sensor to check the alignment page as it is printed. You are not required to take any action to complete the alignment process. Click here if your model does not print an instruction page.
Semi-automatic - these products print the alignment page and instructions for scanning the alignment page using the scanner assembly. Click here if your model prints an instruction page .
Automatic cartridge alignment
Perform the following steps to align the ink cartridges:
Disconnect the power cord from the unit, wait five seconds, and then plug it back in. This will reinitialize the unit.
Print another alignment test page. If the Press Enter to align message is not currently on the front panel display, complete the following steps to print an alignment page:
Press Setup or Menu on the front panel (depending on the model).
Press the Right Arrow (>) until Maintenance or Tools appears in the display, and then press Enter or OK (depending on the model).
Press the Right Arrow (>) until Align ink Cartridges appears in the display, and then press Enter or OK (depending on the model).
To determine if the automatic alignment is functioning correctly, look into the output tray as the alignment page is printing; a blue light should be visible periodically on the page as the cartridges move back and forth. If this light is not present, the unit will not be able to align the cartridges and will require service.
If the blue light is visible and the alignment pages are printing correctly, but the alignment pages still fails, there still may be a hardware problem with the unit.
If there are no other printing problems and you wish to continue, use the information in the " Bypassing the ink cartridge alignment " section below to bypass the alignment. The information from last successful alignment will be used.
If the message keeps reappearing or other print quality problems occur, service the product.
Models with a semi-automatic ink cartridge alignment
Some HP products have a semi-automatic alignment process. These models do not have an additional sensor and will print two pages for the alignment process instead of one. The alignment page must be placed on the scanner glass or into the automatic document feeder (HP Officejet V series) and scanned.
Disconnect the power cord, wait five seconds, and then plug it back in. This will reinitialize the unit and force the scanner to calibrate again.

Now take the dry paper towel and turn the direction of the cartridge so that u can see a Copper plate on it with small boxes just clean that copper plate with the Dry Paper Towel.......... Now try to Print it should work fine.......... Still same Problem Catridges Defective......... Good Luck...........
