Pentax ME Super Shutter and Rapid Wind Button won't release
Found my Dad's old Pentax ME Super camera in great shape, but the shutter and the rapid wind button seem to be stuck. Inside the camera, the inside mirror stays up and makes things dark looking through the viewfinder. Are these potential deadly problems?? Don't remember him having any problems with it. Help. Scratching my head!

The only easy fix is to glue with a super glue with the broken part or parts. If this is lost then you need to fabricate a similar type knob to be glued into the slot making sure that glue does no overflow and get the whole shaft stuck.
other wise the original can be sourced or replaced from a worn out/discarded camera or consult the Pentax service for estimation.. to restore it originally.
One, it could be the battteries. The ME super is not a fully mechanical camera like the mx, if the batteries are depleted then the shutter sticks open as it does not know how long to stay open. Turning the selection wheel to 125X usually unsticks it.
Two, the lubricant that pentax used in the 70's and 80's has a very bad tendecy to polymerise and turn sticky and solid. This turns the camera inoperable. Pentax repair service routinely provide cleaning for affected cameras.
The Pentax is a easy fix, maybe.. If you feel comfortable removing the bottom cover, then remove the 3 cross point screws. The battery, if installed will be loose. Looking at the bottom section of the camera, locate the tripod socket. On on side is the battery compartment, the other an L shaped lever. Under the L shaped lever is a brass plate with a slot in it. In that slot is another lever that has a spring going through the end eyelet. Move that lever toward the front of the camera until it latches on the L shaped lever above. Then try the release.
The first thing to try on the X700 is fresh batteries. Clean the battery cap and contacts with a pencil eraser.
Pentax ME Super was one of my favorite camera, small and clean shutter release. But it has been about 25 years since it was manufactured. They happen to use rubber break within shutter unit and as any rubbers, it started to deteriorate and melt between the shutter-blades. This prevents the complete cycle of the shutter and jams the winding. You may be able to unjam the winding but eventually you have to overhaul the shutter unit. Overhaul charge is around $100 in US repair market. -James
it could be the rubber bumper next to the fresnel lens has become sticky. very gently ( after removing lens ) try to bring mirror down without forcing it. it should release easily.
if not, rotate the select knob off auto. open film door and check that the shutter is fully deployed, shutters should not be overlapping.
remove screws from bottom cover and remove cover, keep camera up side down so that re-wind button stays put. there is a locking lever under the take up spool ( gray ) . with a pin move lever toward film door and bring advance lever fully to the right , then let it go so it returns quickly.
the shutter should have fired. if not the camera will need to be repaired. get an estimate first as there are no new parts available.
Press the rewind button and wind the film advance lever, It will set to its place. Release the rewind button, press the shutter release button.Once again try wind the film.( provided your camera is not fitted with motor wind )
Pressing the rewind button wind the film advance lever,if it is free It will set to
its place. Release the rewind button, press the shutter release
button.Once again try wind the film.( provided your camera is not
fitted with motor wind ) Then your winding gears need cleaning
This is a common problem with the older Pentax SLRs : shutter / mirror box needs servicing . The problem is caused by perished rubber parts. Although the problem is easy to fix, it has to be carried out by a pro because the mirror box has to be removed from the camera so that one can have access to the shutter and the side of the m-box where the problem is. Costs ? +- $150.
Set your camera to B and release the shutter ( camera will work in this mode without batteries ) if you can wind ok and release shutter fine then all you need is new batteries.
If however your camera is not working when set to B then it is either the shutter or the transport mechanism that need looking at.
From experience ( have repaired 100s of Me-supers ) it is likely that your shutter needs attention : rubber components ( and foam rubber ) inside the shutter ( and the mirror box locking mechanism especially ) have perished and need replacing.
Your camera is cocked but since the shutter is not working you cannot release it and hence your film advance mechanism does not work.
ME-super will work without batteries in full manual mode so set your shutter to B and try to release it.
If the shutter will not release in B mode then the shutter/mirror box will need servicing : rubber components in the mirror box mechanism have perished and need replacing. After that your camera will be fine for another couple of years.
