Is it XP?
open my computer, then right click on the external drive, select properties. Then select the tools tab. Click on Check Now. This will run a Scandisk on it and correct any errors.

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe

Computer won't recognize external usb hard drive

try it on another computer if that dosent work you should
reformat your computer but first backup all your data by putting your another internal hardrive on your computer and move all your files you need to the empty hardrive and after that take the hardrive with all your stuff in it off the computer and then reformat the hardrive which the external hardrive does not work on and install a new operating system then put the other hardrive with all your stuff back on your computer and transfer your stuff into the hardrive with a operating system then try the external hardrive

OR
you can burn all your stuff into a CD or a DVD
OR
you can put all your stuff into FlashDrives and then after you reformat the hardrive with an operating system put your stuff back into the computer and after that the external hardrive should work

How to copy photos from PC to external hard drive?

How to Copy Files to an ExternalHard Drive

External hard drives provide great storage space for movies, music, picturesand other documents you want to keep safe over time. The drives generally comewith either USB 2.0 or Firewire connectors, so they also offer reliable datatransfers at high rates of speed. Setting the drives up is usually astraightforward process, and copying files to them from your computer is a snap.

1. Set up your external hard drive according to its instructions. The two majorsteps in setting one up are connecting it to your computer and plugging it intoan external power source. 2. Install any drivers that camewith your drive so your operating system will recognize it. If the drivers areoutdated, download and install new ones from the manufacturer's website. 3. Open the "MyComputer" panel. You'll see both your regular hard drive (the C: drive)and the external hard drive listed. 4. Double-click the externalhard drive's icon to open its window. 5. Drag and drop any files youwish to copy to the external drive into this window. 6. Right-click the "SafelyRemove Hardware" icon in the System Tray and eject the drive once you'vefinished copying your files. Read more: How to CopyFiles to an External Hard Drive ' eHow.com

Most times when you see this message it means your computer can not see you hard drive when booting. I am having same problem and i my case is mo mother board has issues with SATA ports. You can try to replace hard drive cable and also try testing it in another computer. other than mother board this can be also hard drive it self. Test in another pc to determine is it or not. If no other pc by a docking station or hard drive enclosure and use it as usb external drive and see can you access it.you can use any computer even your friends. Hope this helps.

Much better if you have back up on your external HDD as early as now.

Because if anything happen in your computer even it is brand new it will take time and money to have your files transfered to another hard drive. It will cost you like $60 or more.

Note: have back up specialy on your most important files.

It takes @least 30 minutes to boot

It sounds like your computer is not recognising the hard drive. Go into the bios (keep pressing the delete key as your computer starts up ) and find 'hard drive auto select' and press enter to see if your computer can recognise the hard drive. Even if this works it sounds like your hard drive is on the way out.
1/ Make sure no floppy or CD in drives
2/ Check Hard Drive cable connections, both ends
3/ Go into BIOS and check drive is recognised in there

Just bought a maxtor external hard drive 160gb. just plugged it in and computer recognises it, but what do i next? Ideally i would like to set it up to back up my pc once/twice a week. Help

Ok, you bought the hardware, now you need a software to do the backup. There is a freeware to download in the next link. You can buy one if you prefer, either on the Internet or where you bought your external Hard drive. But, do some research on this one, and you will see that it is secure.
