Question about Sears Craftsman LiftMaster Chamberlain Garage Door Opener Wireless Keypad Model 976LM Security+

6 Answers

Can't get Craftsman garage door opener to work with both remotes.

I recently bought a house with a Craftsman garage door opener with two remotes. I can get the opener to work with either remote individually but I can't get it to work with both at the same time. If I clear the memory of the opener by holding the learn button until it flashes, I can get the opener to recognize the first remote that I program. However, it doesn't even appear to see the other. When you put it into program mode, the light does not ever flash when you press any key on remote number two. It will recognize buttons 2,3 three on the first remote as well as the home link remote in my car.

I know remote number 2 is working because I can repeat the process with remote number two and the opener will work with remote 2 and the car but not remote 1.

very strange.

The remotes use batteries like watch batteries and both batteries appear to be functioning because both remotes will activate the door from a long distance from the door.

As I mentioned in my initial post, I can get the opener to work with either remote as long as it is the first one that I sync with the opener after I clear its memory (hold the learn button down until it blinks). But once one of the remotes is sync'd, the other remote ceases to be sensed by the opener.

No, I haven't even begun to attempt to program the keypad out side the garage. I am just trying to get the three button remotes to both work.

Curiously, the homelink remote built into my car seems to work no matter which remote is currently sync'd to the opener.

The board has no switches of any kind on it for programming (limiting) the number of remotes.

I have a Craftsman 139.53683 Universal Remote Control that came with two remotes. When I first got it both remotes worked. After usinfgone remote almost exclusively the other remote no longer works.

I can get the receiver to learn either remote and work fine but not both.

These are the basic instructions If the remote has red led lamp open and set switches to the same as on the
control panel at the motor unit. if any other color lamp on remote
(green) on the control panel their is a program button press and hold
approx. 5 seconds then while flashing press remote. then again for each
extra remote max. memory is 4 remotes. removes any remotes more than 4
storing the last four. holding the program button for 30 seconds
deletes all codes and you can start with new codes.

You can always add an external option, like the Street Smart key fob. There are others like it and you work around your problem. It is a very common problem and sometimes there is no answer to get them all working again. If you still have questions or need further assistance please let me know. If you have a moment to accept and rate my solution appropriately it will be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Lee

Today I solved the exact same problem. One of my remotes (the problematic remote) would pair -- but it prevented my other remote AND wireless keypad from pairing. If I paired the other remote and wireless keypad first, the problematic remote would not pair.

Basically the test is:

  1. clear the codes (the 6 sec light-out press)
  2. press-and-hold the button of a remote and watch to see if the SRT indicator light flashes (seems to indicate transmission is being received).
If indicator light flashes, press-then-release the SRT button, to pair.

If indicator light doesn't flash, either your remote is dead or the logic board needs replacing.

Whatever remote I chose as my first remote -- it would pair. The problematic remote would not allow the other devices to pair (NO indicator lights would flash when I attempted to pair subsequent devices).

A low-cost test is to buy a new remote BUT DO NOT OPEN THE PLASTIC ! You can press the button on a 53681 remote through the plastic.

I substituted a new remote for the problematic remote and now have 3 working devices (2 remotes + 1 wireless keypad).

Sounds like the control board is acting up on you. Is it possible that you have a model that will allow you to set the number of functional remotes by either setting a switch on the base unit, or perhaps a certain programming sequence that will enable a second remote to be used? I would try going to Sears.com to see if they have a downloadable operator's manual to check and see if this is possible. Otherwise, I would suggest taking the unit off--leaving the door and track up so that you can still use it manually, and taking the base unit to your local authorized Sears repair shop. Hope this helps! Have a nice night!

Both the remotes u r using r of same make and model or both r of different models .if so than it is very much possible that you have to get synced the remote control to make it use.as both should be having different acceptence facility.

Ensure first that you are using good alkaline batteries on the remotes.

If batteries are OK, then the remotes or the sensor are defective, contact the distributor as soon as possible.

If it is Sears Door Opener, either the remote , or the control console with the receiver are faulty, see if you can keep chain driver and replace the remote.

SOURCE: Garage door opener won't work unless right on top of garage

The receiver is most likely going bad. It is part of the logic board. The other possibility is if you added anything electric to the garage. Some of the strangest things will interfere with the opener. If you added anything unplug it and try. Otherwise it is the receiver.

SOURCE: I have a craftsman garage door opener modle

If the battery in the keypad is good and you are sure the keypad is the right model for your opener and these directions don't work to program it and you have other remote units that do work then your keypad is bad.

Locate the smart/learn button on the rear of the motor unit near where all those white wires go. Press and immediately release this and then walk over to the keypad and key in any 4 digit code you like and press enter.

If you didn't, try programming the remote this way.

Press and hold the button on the remote and then press and immediately release the smart/learn button on the motor unit. If this doesn't work you need to make sure you have the correct remote for the model opener you have. Your model number doesn't bring any results from Sears Parts.com.

Post the model number of the opener and the model numbers of the remotes. The opener model number is found on the end closest to the door and starts with 139.

Try programming the keypad like this:

Locate the smart/learn button on the rear of the motor unit near where all those white wires go. Press and immediately release this and then walk over to the keypad and key in any 4 digit code you like and press enter.

After programming the keypad see if either remote will work with it. Post this information also.

On the remotes put switch #1 in either position and match up switches 2 through 10 to the dipswitches on the motor unit. There is a good possibility your receiver has quit working.

My Craftsman remote won't close my garage door

If the remote opens and closes while inside the garage but not outside , there are a few things it could be. Assuming it was working fine before..
1. weak battery in remote.
2. remote itself could be bad. (unless you have more than 1 remote acting the same)
3. Logic board in opener is going bad causing limited range. Is the wire that hangs down from the opener straightened out? That is your remote antenna. Some people have coiled or even cut it off..reducing range.
4. Less likely but this can happen- interference from another electronic device, wireless routers, cell phone, new appliances etc.. can reduce remote range. Any new electronics recently purchased?

Universal garage door remote

I have a feeling your neighbor operated their door opener when you were programming your new clicker. Try erasing the memory of your opener and then program the clicker again making sure your neighbors do not operate theirs at the same time. To erase the memory hold the smart/learn button in for 10 seconds.

Garage door opener

I was having a problem with the remotes. Program one remote, and the other stops working and vice-versa. I found the solution to be as follows: Using 61LM single-button remotes for Lift-master WhisperDrive (belt drive) garage door opener, I set the dipswitches (find them by removing battery replacement cover) to identical settings in both remotes. Set the first dipswitch to the neutral (0) setting. Next -- and this is the important part -- press the learn button on the main door opening unit, and, while the small LED light is lit, press the button on ONE of the remotes. DO NOT REPEAT ON THE SECOND REMOTE. Upon doing this, I found that BOTH remotes at last worked. I then went on to program a keyless entry pad, which was accomplished by again pressing the learn button on the main unit, and then entering the number sequence I had chosen for my entry code on the keypad, and pressing Enter. Both remotes continued to function and the keypad functions as well.
