Question about Sony SL-HF2000 VCR

Open Question

Playback picture I have a Sony HF 720 VCR that has little use but has a major playback problem. The sound is fine from both lef and right channels. I have tried the manual and automatic tracking adjustment as explained in the owners manual. I have also cleaned the heads with a wet head cleaner. I also attempted the adjustment mentioned on your website buy removing the top and adjusting the guides. Nothing seems to have helped the picture is totally a vertical garb, recognizing nothing. Motor is smooth and quiet, remote works great, no other problems. Thank you for your asistance Brian

SOURCE: Poor playback

Because the cable signal is OK, this eliminates the tuner as your problem and leaves the power supply which is a common problem. It is a switch mode type which often have trouble maintaining control of its output voltages and produce trouble downstream in the video circuitry. Either the power supply is failing which can be wholesale replaced for about a $150, or something somewhere else is failing and loading down the supply causing it to overwork. Usually in this case, you can hear a whine noise if you listen close.

1) Set your TV to channel 3.
2) Insert a pre-recorded tape into this unit.
3) Press the OUTPUT button on the DVD/VCR so that the VCR OUTPUT light is lit.
• If noise appears on the TV screen, press the VCR/TV button on the remote control.
4) Press the PLAY button once.
5) After a few seconds, press the PLAY button on the DVD/VCR for 3 seconds.
• The RF output channel will change to channel 3 from channel 4 and you will see a playback picture.

I have a Toshiba cx35e70 tv. The problem began as a turn on, live screen, no channels, no sound. I found that when I would tap on the tuner on the main board the problem would disappear. Every thing worked...

Is the VCR going through ch 3 or video inputs - if video inputs your TV tuner is likely bad if through ch 3 seeif te picture goes funny on ch 3 without using the VCR the tuner may be bad on higher band channels - smetimes you can remove the tuner and resolder the tuner itself. But if it always works with the VCR just use it that way and don't bother with the fix.

Proscan vcr psvr70

Sounds like it's wired up wrong...try this:
take cable line to VCR in, VCR out to cable/receiver box(if you have one) then box to TV...it sounds like the vcr is getting the channels from the box and not the vcr...you will need to have the vcr scan the channels (round in the settings menu) You will also be able to watch and record 2 different things.
