Question about Brother IntelliFAX 4100 Laser Fax

1 Answer

Paper Jam About 95% of the time as I use my 4100 as a copier, it jams. As the paper lifts off the lower tray, it stops. I flip the paper, separate the sheets and try again. Sometimes that helps. Other times I fiddle with the two plastic lever type pieces and the roller where the paper goes in. Sometimes that helps. Any suggestions? Thanks, Art

Hi Art,
Try cleaning the rubber feed rollers with a good grade of isopropyl alcohol.

Make sure the side guides of the feeder are not too tight.

How do I remove a paper jam? The paper is

The following is general advice that applies to removing paper jams in most printers, copiers, etc.

Switch off the printer at the wall and unplug it. Remove the paper tray from the printer. Check to see if the printer has an access door in the rear to allow you to see inside (open it). Open any other external flaps (eg. manual paper feed tray) that will allow you to see inside. Open any internal flaps or levers designed for user operation and usually indicated with a green or orange coloured tab.

Always remove jammed paper by pulling it in the direction of normal travel only. Don't try to pull it out against the direction that it entered the printer. Sometimes rollers inside the machine have a knob (usually coloured green or orange) that can be used to manually wind the page through the printer or fax. Always turn in direction of arrow indicated only.

After removing page, return all levers, flaps, doors, paper trays etc to original positions, reconnect power to the printer and test

You either have a paper path blockage or your feed rollers are worn. You'll need to take it apart to check though. Try removing paper, turning machine off and on and re-inserting paper. Remember to fan (separate) paper before loading, it could be static causing the sheets to stick together and jam in the machine.

best guess is it belongs under the paper lift plate in your paper tray, remove the paper tray and all the paper, there should be a metal paper lift plate in the paper tray, these are typically spring loaded to lift the paper into place. lift the plate and check the underside for the location of the spring, there is usually a retainer of some sort to hold the spring in place. once the spring is in place the tray should feed correctly.

Hope this is of some help.

PAPER JAM

If you pull the drum out of the machine. Close front cover. is the noise still there. If it is then you have a broken fuser gear. If noise is not there remove the toner cart. from drum reinstall the drum unit in machine see if noise is there. if noise is there then it will be the drum. If not reinstall the toner try that if noise comes back then it is your toner cart.

Jammed paper...

Try removing the Toner/drum unit and see if paper is there. Also check the rear access door to see if paper is stuck in the fuser.
Sometimes you will get a jam where the paper has not even left the paper tray. Try removing the paper tray and cleaning the paper feed roller with and cloth dampened with a little water. The roller is located just above the center of the tray.

If I recall correctly, you lift up the gray cover closest to the paper tray.

Your user manual is on the CD that you got with your OfficeJet.

Or...go to www.hp.com for detailed help.

Says paper jam, but it is not really jammed

There are a couple of sensors that read paper paper jams. Below the toner/drum asm check to see if the little black flags are moving freely. In the rear, open the door and check the flag in the fuser.
