Question about Sony VAIO PCV-W20 PC Desktop

1 Answer

Display won't stay visible

When I power up the display tries to come up, will stay on intermittently for a moment, and then goes dark. I can see an image very faintly, almost as if it's burned in, but it is an image of the currently running program. I tried hitting f8 as it starts up, but that has no effect. I normally just log out and leave the unit on all of the time, and there is a screen saver running. The problem arose when I was away for a few days.

Re: Display won't stay visible

If you can see the moving image faintly then it sounds like a problem with the backlight on the screen. Backlights can fail, but usually a cause is an impact of some kind.

From your description, it would seem that the monitor itself could be the problem. If you have a second monitor, try to plug that in and see what occurs. If you have a display, you have located the problem. You may also try to go to the BIOS and disable the onboard video, so that the GeForce will load. It could be conflicting with the onboard video.
Let me know how you make out,

I have sony vaio desktop. My moniter keeps going off and on. Tried different moniter does the same thing. Could it be something that the desktop might be causing. Also, last year I replaced my power...

When you say 'on and off' you have not indicated if the whole power on the monitor is going on and off or if the monitor remains turned on but the screen display goes on and off.
Is the monitor power plugged through the socket on the pc or direct to a power outlet?
multiplug power outlet boards are often a source of power failure.
Did you try a different power lead for the monitor and b) a different wall socket?
If it is the screen display that is intermittent you should check the graphics card is fully seated (if it's a separate one)

No Display

Display set to too dark? Tried another monitor, safe mode or another graphic card? If safe mode works, then you might need to update the driver of your graphic card. What setting do you use for the remote connection?

I have a HP Pavilion laptop ze4900. Every time I move th screen, the display either goes off completely, or it goes vey dim and I cannot read anything from it. The only thing I can do to get a display

You could have a defective screen - a defective inverter or a CCFL lamp.
To determine if you have a LCD screen or video card problem, read this and follow the instructions.

Defective CCFL backlight, it may have the following symptom:

  • Screen flashs on red/pink and off.
  • Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal.
  • Picture flickering with dim display.
  • Picture flickering on and off.
All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp) has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replacing the CCFL lamp

Connect an external monitor to your laptop and power it up, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight.

Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burnt out, most likely this is the case.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.

Laptop fell from 3 foot high shelf. Display is barely visible now, can see it but only if direct light is shone at an angle.

It sounds like you broke the backlight in the display. You will need to replace the LCD screen.

Thanks and please take a moment to rate as fixya.

HP TC4200 tablet pc. Screen keeps going dark, can JUST make out characters. Happens more frequently on AC power, lesson battery. Resolved by closing and reopening screen hinge. When connected to external...

Do what you can to rule out the tablet's firmware and power-management software being dotty (by refreshing those installations.)  Just in case, put an order for a replacement backlight in (from HP, who can at least let you on to the part number, or elsewhere...) and have a flatscreen handy to use as a spare display if the internal one gives out on you!

Oh!  And file questions like this in a non-general category so you can get answers sensible to HP tablet PCs!
