Question about Pix Cameras
My camera all of sudden will not turn on, just a message with red exclamation point says turn off camera and turn on again, but does nothing else, can anyone help?

My sister had the same problem and I was trying to figure out what it was so I googled it and someone suggested to take the camera and hit it (not very hard) with the lens side down on a table.....This may sound completely crazy but I tried it and it made a weird sound so I turned it off then on again and it worked!! Hope it works!

Sounds like some software error.
Try updating the firmware for your Nikon D40 camera.
Here it is: http://support.nikontech.com/cgi-bin/nikonusa.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=14167&p_created=1169491133&p_accessibility=0&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PWRmbHQmcF9ncmlkc29ydD0zOjImcF9yb3dfY250PTEwODUmcF9wcm9kcz0mcF9jYXRzPSZwX3B2PSZwX2N2PSZwX3NlYXJjaF90eXBlPWFuc3dlcnMuc2VhcmNoX25sJnBfcGFnZT0x&p_li=&p_topview=1

I had the same problem with a Fufifilm camera. When I looked closely at the memory card I noticed a little white sliding button on the left hand side. When it is in the down position the card is locked or protected. Just slide the button up and put it back in your camera and it should work.

I jeremy- i was having the exact same problem today. I phoned Sony repair, who then had me take out the battery and hold down the power button for about 30 seconds..reinsert the battery and power up. Didn't fix it. I came home and read some posts on here. I ended up trying the gently twist the lens as it was zooming in and out..I twisted a little and pulled a little. About the third time, it worked. (I also held the power button down with the battery in, just to try..maybe that helped, too). Sony wants flat fee of $91 to fix..is that what they told you?

SOURCE: Camera powers on, then off
My got fixed when I gave it 5 gentle, firm bangs on the carpet with the bottom facing down. Got the advice from somebody online, figured, it's already broken and about 2 years old so what do I have to lose? To me was less risky than trying to open it. The focus problem got fixed and so far no message. Worth trying
