It really depends on the specific printer interface you have!
Newer printers can be attached to a Desktop or Notebook via the USB interface (small connector as for mouse).
Older printers, and 'commerciall' high speed printers, have a 'parallel' printer interface (large connector - LPT port) that will connect to a desktop (or higher end laptop) with a parallel (LPT) printer port. If you need a LPT connection, a USB to LPT converter can be used ... but a newer USB connected printer may be a cheaper alternative in this case!
Most printers now use the USB port instead of the older parallel ports that has several input/out pins. Some printers (new-out-of-the-box) do not come with the USB cable, therefore purchase one for your printer if it requires a USB cable. The computer should have more than one USB ports to plug into.

*A VGA connector and cable are used to carry analog video signals plus display and graphics data. The VGA is a 15-pin connector commonly found on laptops and other devices. With this port you need a PC-to-TV Convertor to connect laptop to TV. You simply plug the VGA cable from the source into the convertor, and use an S-Video or RCA cable out to the TV. The converter is USB powered, so there’s no external power adapter to carry around, making this laptop to TV connection entirely portable.
you will need a seperate audio cable unless you are going to use your laptop's speakers
Browsing over the md120 specs, included should be a software disc for the usb connector, so it shouldn't matter whether you use an adapter or the 4 to 4 cable. This disc will have the drivers and software for using the camera in conjunction with your laptop. Have you tried this download for the camera. http://software.canon-europe.com/products/0010449.asp
Also check out this link. Towards the bottom under additional features it lists software, drivers and utilities, and at the bottom under supplied accessories it lists application software/usb driver. Go to the store you purchased this at or contact Cannon support and get the disc that was supposed to be included.
