I have a maytag top loader, that is about seven years old. this washer started running off balance so often that i thought maybe one of the tub springs was broken. i checked all the springs by removing the front panal of the washer and all are fine. the washer started running the other night like it was out of balance, but when i opened the lid it was not. the basket would start to spin then stop like it was out of balance. now the machine will only agitate on the spin cycle, it acts like the motor will not shift into high speed for the spin cycle at all. i am at a loss at this time as to what to do. the motor does run the agitator, but that's it........thanks.........mike
Sounds like you have a bad timer. There are quite a few sets of points inside of these. Timer is behind the knob that you set to start your wash. Some of these can be bought off ebay and other appliance repair sights. If you have any mechanical and electrical savvy you can do repair yourself. Usually only tools needed is screwdriver and small socket wrench. Hope this helps Stan

i believe i can help you,,but washers dont agitate in the spin cycle,,i believe you ment it wont wring or spin in the spin cycle..your lid switch is defective,,replace,,if need be i can talk you though,,onthejob
SOURCE: won't agitate or spin
If you mean that when the unit should be agitating or spinning the motor is running, and you lift the lid causing the motor to stop running, it sounds like the coupler.

Hello srcoray,
Did you replace the clutch, just trying to get a feel for your hands on experience with the machine? If you did the work did your machine use the upper roller clutch bearing along with the clutch pulley mounted roller clutch bearing?
The FAV6800AW uses a reversing motor and motor controller that powers the motor and clutch pulley to rotate CW in Wash/Agitate cycle and CCW in Spin Cycle.
In Wash/Agitate cycle the roller clutch bearing should rotate freely CW allowing the agitator shaft to drive the transmission in wash cycle driving the tumblers to rotate only not the wash basket. In spin cycle the roller clutch bearing will lock up (one-way roller clutch bearing) driving the spinner shaft to rotate the wash basket and transmission CCW. Unless my thinking is wrong it sounds like the one way roller clutch bearing is frozen or dragging and not rotating freely in wash cycle rotating the wash basket CW. I’m an owner like you and will try to help.
Just a few other questions;
If you have a load of wet clothes in the wash basket and you select Spin Only cycle will the spin cycle complete with out dc/UC errors?
With the lid raised can you rotate the wash basket CW? It should not; it should only rotate CCW and do that with very little resistance.

My rule of thumb: Take what you paid for the washer new and divide by number of years without repairs. That is your cost per year for the washer. If the repair will get you another year and is less than the number above do the repair. If you have done more than 2 major repairs in a year it is time to think new. eric
SOURCE: tub bangs loudly
there may be 3 to 4 load springs on the underside of the machine that attatches to the tub. if one of these breaks which often do on my machine. They will cause the machine to become unbalanced and bang.
