Question about Seagate FreeAgent Pro - 500GB, 7200 RPM, USB 2.0, eSATA, External 500 GB Hard Drive

My computer stopped reading my external hard drive

I have a free agent Seagate 500G External Hard drive. Everything was completely fine... the computer was shut off and I unplugged and removed it from the USB so I could get some pictures off of it to put on my laptop. I plugged it into my new laptop and it wouldn't read the connection and I tried multiple ports on it. I've done this before with my old laptop (Sony V) and never had a problem switching back and forth. Since it wouldn't read I tried to plug it back into the desk top computer and now it won't read it. There is power going to it because the light is on and I can feel and hear it trying to process something like its working, I switched out the USB cable going to the computer and tried multiple ports. I even took a flash drive plugged it into a port and it showed up immediately on the computer and then tried to plug my external back in the same one and it wouldn't work. So the computer reads other devices put in the same port but not my external. There is power going to the external, all connections are secure, its not the USB cord so I ithink its the hard drive itself... how can I get all of my files off of it or get it to work?
Thanks, kim buzzs and squeeks. does not sound like the drive is spinning

Try the drive in a different USB port. If it still fails try another computer. If it still fails then it's possible the drive is bad. If the warranty has expired you may be able to find a tech savvy friend to remove the actual drive from the case and hook it up to another computer directly. If it recognizes fine then the case is bad. If it does not recognize the drive then the drive is dead.

You won't be able to retrieve the files on the drive unfortunately unless you use an extremely expensive service. These tend to run in the hundreds of dollars.

It may be the interface that has failed but I suspect the hdd has failed.
Take the hdd out of the case and fit another drive. If that one is OK the hdd is dead. If it doesn't work, try a new usb to SATA interface.

My computer cannot detect my external drive(500gb seagate)

Okay the problem could be either with your computer or the external drive the first thing you need to do is try the external drive on another computer a friend's or someone's and see if it shows the files if it does not show the files on an another computer as well as your current computer then I suspect the problem is with the drive this is common especially if these drives have dropped or taking a file or gotten old if the drive is clicking and not spinning that's a big problem if the drive is spinning and you can hear it spin but it's not showing up on the computer there may be a different issue you may need to look towards data recovery for that external drive that's the best I can tell you at this time and based on the information you've given best of luck

Try connecting it to another computer. If you can see your data then back it up etc.
After you have recovered your data connect it to your computer, from Disk Manager, remove the partition, recreate it again and then format the drive, hopefully your external drive will be operational again.
There is a possibility that the hard disk has died and you will have lost your data. If you are desparate, hard drive data recovery companies charge an arm and a leg to recover data from dead drives.
