I had a zigzag problem with Elna SU Electronic Air, which I fixed with your solution, but some of the unfreeze liquid had gone down the bobbin winder hole and now the outer wheel on the right side wil

Elna SU Air Electronic - bought in 1982, but still in perfect condition. I was using it and decided to do zigzag, but it would not work so cleaned it and got it going by moving needle holder from side to side, but had at accident and dropped some liquid down the bobbin winder opening onto the flywheel.

Is the belt slipping now? You'll probably need to take off the top cover and see if you can clean up the spilt lubricant off the bobbin winder mechanisim and the drive belt on the right of this. The bobbin winder is friction driven, a rubber ring around a plastic barrel and when you click this over to the right the rubber ring drives off the main drive part of the machine.

removing the top panel is a bit tricky because you've got the handle there too, two screws unscrew it, then you need to manouvere the cover upwards and left to get it out of the bobbin feed part then tip it to the back of the machine to give you a view of the inners. You might want to subscribe to the Yahoo group called "Elna Heirlooms" as there's probably a prior thread on this there, lots of Swiss Elna owners who service their own machines, very useful place to visit.

SOURCE: needle position

this wheel does seize over a period of time.Remove the top cover so that you can see the wheel. It can be unseized by spraying a mixture of 20% ammonia to 80% water under the wheel. Let it sit for 20-30 minutes, spray it again and then turn it with a pair of pliers. Do NOT break it!! use a soft cloth around it if you want to protect the wheel from scratches.

SOURCE: winding bobbin- elna

The bobbinwinder spindle is on the top of the machine on the right.

Try to turn the spindle with your fingers. If it is turning easily, good. If not, see below.

Push the spindle to the right and it should turn when the handwheel turns.

If the spindle does not turn properly, remove the two screws that hold the top cover on. DO NOT REMOVE THE SCREW THAT IS ON THE SMALL BLOCK NEXT TO THE BOBBINWINDER SPINDLE.

The top cover will not remove because of the handle. While lifting up the cover, peer under to make sure that there is a small rubber tire on the under side of the bobbinwinder spindle.

If the tire is there, place a small drop of oil on the spindle and turn it until it frees up. Try not to get oil on the tire, it will make it slip. Wipe it off if it gets oily.

Replace the top and retry.

My Elna repair man is also the individual I purchased my Elna from in December 1980. His name is Boyd Albright, located in Ottawa, Kansas. I have never had the issues you describe, but Boyd has always serviced my machine and as far as I'm concerend, is the best. When I was told by another sewing machine shop in Mississipi that my machine could not be fixed, Boyd did and for less than $40.00! Contact info: 1231 S Willow St

Has this just started after a jam up? As it's usually a symptom of timing being out.
However first check needle is in right way, flat shank to the back and threading is correct including the take up lever.

No foot switch for Elna Su (1972-78?)-can I use the foot petal from an Elna Zigzag that I have?

I'm asuming you have the integrated foot controller and power lead in one, yes these are both Swiss Tavaro made machines and should have the same plug shape so should be interchangeable. Also the bobbins should be identical, seven holes on top and dished. And the feet should be the same too.

Elna Carine Electronic Sewing Machine

You should be able to buy a manual online but it may be a cd or image pdf file. Try www.sewingpartsonline.com or www.sewusa.com. If they don't have the Carina but have the Air Electronic SU, model 68 then this will be almost the same. Main difference is the Carina has the needle up/down button.
