- If the drive tray is jammed, and the tray cannot be ejected and cleared
manually, the drive should be replaced. Some drives have an emergency
eject hole.
If
for any reason the tray does not eject automatically, insert and press
an eject-bar inside the emergency eject hole to manually eject the
tray. A straightened paper clip with a diameter of 1.2 mm (typical) can
be used as an eject-bar.
NOTE: Make sure to turn off the power before manual disc eject operation.
hi, first you can remove the disc from the drive with a small needle or something small that fits into the hole in the drive tray, it will eject the disc.
after the disc is out, restart the computer, turn the drive on and off, connect it to the computer with usb, turn the drive on, turn the computer on and see if it works, if it doesn't work try another usb connector.
if its still not working have a look into the device manager while its connected and turned on, right click my computer and select manage, then on the left side of the window select device manager now on the right side look for anything with a ! or ? mark on it, or a unknown device, turn the power off on the device and see if something dissapears, what dissapeared is the usb drive, power it back on and right click on it to see the status.

I went through this problem with Ubuntu Jaunty and never did solve the problem ... the problem being that the operating system does not recognize my PATA HP 1040d DVD/CD-RW. It is the only thing connected using the PATA connection and is set as ''slave''. My other drives (DVD-ROM (slave) and HDD (master)) are on the SATA connectors. If there is anyone out there who has personally overcome this problem please let me know how you did it. I am not technically minded and my computer skills are rather modest compared with most of my peers on this site ... so please make it simple and step by step, (I can however follow instructions quite well). Computer is a HP Compaq dx2250. (business machine) Memory is 1.8 GB 75 GB hdd AMD Athlon 64 System is Linux Ubuntu 9.10 32 bit (tried 64 bit ... same problem). thank you, gael.
