Here is a legal version of the Vista discovery DVD to download: http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/windows-vista-recovery-disc-download/

Otherwise, you can call Microsoft to obtain one.

Acer extensa 5420 ... how to access recovery options when I have forgotten or was never told my password? And to trump that mess I need to be able to do this when windows won't boot up to allow me to...

see if you have a recovery partition on your hard drive to put it back top factory settings
with an Acer you press Alt + F10 at boot to start the recovery process
and to make Recovery disks from it click Start - look under Acer Software - and then under eRecovery
or borrow a microsoft vista dvd; not an HP, Acer etc recovery disk
make sure you borrow the correct 32bit or 64bit microsoft dvd for your computer
they contain all versions of vista
it is the product key that determines which vista version is installed

What fies on recovery partition

Did you use a Factory Recovery DVD supplied by the cpmputer manufacturer? Or did you load the OS from a Windows Vista DVD? If you didn't use the Computer's Factory Recovery disk the recovery partition is gone, when you loaded the Windows Vista DVD and formatted the HDD. That is, if I understant your statement. If you had your HDD partitioned into 2 secions, 1 your OS and another for whatever, your OS partition, containing the recovery, has been formatted. For example: C , being your OS and D, being your recovery , are one partition.

Set msi 171f to factory defaults

Normally, you would press F10 or F11 at Startup to commence the Recovery Process..

Another way I have seen on some models is to tap F8, and go to a list of Startup options, and start a Factory Standards Recovery from in there, by selecting the Repair computer option.

Also ask them if it is possible to make Recovery Disk/s from the Recovery Partition in case of Hard Drive failure or System Crash.

They will tell you how to do that.

Each Computer Manufacturer has their own way of making Recovery Disk/s.

Or borrow a proper Microsoft Vista DVD(not Dell, HP, etc).
A proper Vista DVD contains all Vista versions.
The Product Key determines which Vista version gets installed.

There are 2 Vista disks: one for 32bit Operating System, and one for 64bit Operating System.

If a clean install is required with a proper Vista DVD (not HP, Dell Recovery Disks):

Go into your Bios/Setup, or Boot Menu, at startup, and change the Boot Order to make the DVD/CD drive 1st in the Boot Order, then reboot with the disk in the Drive.

At startup/power on you should see at the bottom of the screen either F2 or DELETE, to go into Bios/Setup, or F12 for the Boot Menu

Forgot password, does not have cd rom drive, need to restore to factory settings. How???

Hi there,

How to obtain Vista Recovery Media and/or use the Vista Recovery Partition on your computer to put it back to Factory Settings.

There is no legal free Vista download available.

Contact your Computer Manufacturer and ask them to send you a set of Vista Recovery disk/s.

They normally do that for a small $ cost.

Also, ask them if you have a Recovery Partition on your Computer/Laptop to restore it to Factory settings.

See if a Manual came with the computer, or go to the Manufacturer's website, email or phone them for info on how to do a Recovery.

Send me the steps that should be follow to get another set of recovery dvd'S FOR hp laptop with vista operating systems

HP laptops have a space set-aside for back-up and recovery. Your HP should allow you to create a set of back-up DVD's for your compute.

Go to "help and support" and query recovery disks.

Also, check if you have a recovery drive (drive "d")

Should you need to recover you HP laptop be sure to backup all you essential files (music, photos, documents, downloads etc.) No need to save the programs you have on disk and/or download. Just prepare for a lot of work.

I just did it on my wife's HP laptop with Vista and now she has a "new" computer.

Do you have the product key for Windows Vista - it should be on a sticker on the side of the computer. If so, you can try the following:
  • Borrow a friends DVD for Vista and enter your product key when asked.  This will automatically select the correct version of Vista as all version are stored on the same DVD.
