Question about Projection Televisions

9 Answers

I was adjusting the blue convergence via remote control. The blue cross was way off but did not seem to move no matter how long I pushed the button on the remote, then I heard a short high pitched sound and the tv went black with no sound either. Now I get nothing out of my tv, if you unplug it, when you plug it back in the timer led blinks once quickly and then comes on again for a couple of seconds while you hear some clicking inside the tv. After that I have nothing and the tv will not turn on via the switch or the remote control.

  • maxxwell2 Nov 22, 2008

Wouldn't I still have power and sound if these IC failed.

  • maxxwell2 Nov 22, 2008

Yes Ginco I see your comments but others say I should still have power and sound, and I am having problems because I can only see one comment at a time and can not see the whole thread.

Clicking relay problem is not due to the Convergence (STK ICs). A bad STK IC will not keep the set from turning on. I really believe this is the relay switch or some faulty caps. Hard to tell with out physically checking the set. Replacing the PS board can be a sensible idea as well. The board should cost you around 150$. The part number is 1-659-752-11. Good luck!

U will have the power and sound if the STK ICs get failed but if with that STK ICs if any other electric component like fuse or capacitor is got faulty it is quite possible that u may not get sound or picture.
but replacing the STK ICs with a proper technician and getting the board checked completely may definately resolve your problem.
and reparing will not be costly it will be negligible and it is worth getting it repaired because as per u stated the problem it can be seen that the tv is in proper condition.just the minute reparing and some small parts needs to be replaced.

Sounds like the power realy switch or a capacitor has blown , take the back off the TV and have a look for a "semiconductor" >>>> like these I was adjusting the blue - af5563e.jpg that has blackened, and any capacitors >>>like these f0c3946.jpg which will be swollen
If you heard a "POP" sound after the high pithced sound, this is what i would look for.

you will not get power or sound if a relay switch has blown

  • Lee Hodgson
    Lee Hodgson Nov 24, 2008

It is not easy to fix. I don't think it is worth repairing because it will cost more than the price of a new set.

The "clicking sound" is a symptom of
crashing power supplies, protection and power management systems gone
out of control. There could be several ailments with the set.

The convergence ICs have failed. There are two of them and they must be removed (un-soldered) and replaced. Sometimes there are a couple of burnt resistors that need to be replaced, also.

It is not a job for the faint hearted. Only if you have advanced soldering skills should you attempt it on your own. The ICs, called STK392s cost around $10 to $50 each depending on where you purchase them.

If you have a repair shop do the job it will cost around $400 or so.

That is probably because one of the two convergence ICs had blown, the pico fuses on convergence board must be tested.

Test back the two stk ICs onconvergence board, or have them tested by a technician.

When the service convergence procedure does not work, you need to test the pico fuses on convergence board for continuity, and eventually replace the defective STK IC.

  • Ginko
    Ginko Nov 22, 2008

    I will explain the situation:

On your convergence board you find two ICs, they are called STKs or generally convergence ICS, they are power amps ICs that regulate TV's convergence.

You probably started to have problems with convergence because one or both ICs were starting to fail.

The convergence setup procedure did not work, because one or both the ICs were indeed faulty.

Now the TV is not starting at all because the IC had blown.

You test the ICs by checking for continuity the pico fuses at the base of the ICs, on convergence board.
To replace the STKs you need to do a precision soldering , using good tools and thermal compound.

Replacing the whole convergence board is easier, but it is still a work that should be done by a technician.

If you want to call a technician you can use the number listed on the user manual.

If you want to do it yourself, or buy parts yourself, check on this website.

What does it mean "take out the power button on the front"?

When the convergence board is faulty because an IC has blown, the TV goes in protected mode, that means that the TV stays in standby and do not start when you press the button.

I am not sure you will be able to see my comments , as you refused my previous solution.

The STK ICs cost a couple of dollars, the convergence board costs from $60 to $80 I think, you find exact quotes on the website I gave you, let me know if you can still see my comments.

    Thanks.

  • Ginko
    Ginko Nov 22, 2008

Leave the TV unplugged overnight, this will drain power completely from the TV circuits.

If it does not startup in the morning you will need a technician having a look at the TV and probably replacing convergence ICs or whole convergence board.

Here is the STK for your TV, you have two of them on convergence board, the board must be ordered from akai.

Here is a broad explanation on how to do the job.

I answered ten times or so, no if the convergence ICs fail , you get TV in standby , no sound, and TV safety protection switch clicking with tv not starting when you press power switch.

    Can you read my comment?

Others do not have a clue , on Fixya you have both users like you and real technicians, the others know probably less than you and are just guessing.

Lets go back to the problem:

What you are experiencing is nortmal, what you heard clicking is the protection circuit switch turning off TV to prevent further damage, as it had detected a fault.

Since you started having convergence problems, and the convergence procedure failed, it is likely a convergence problem.

The most common convergence problem is the convergence ICs blowing..

Replacing convergence ICs is not a job for beginners , you need a technician.

If you have the user manual call Akai and ask a quote for the repair, and also ask if you can get a warranty extension.

A repair at a local repairer will be around $200, at least that is the average cost in UK.

    The ICs cost $6.99.

Things you can do and must do:

Leave TV power cord (and all other cables ) unplugged overnight. As I explained this is called hard reset will fix the problem if you are very lucky and the ICs are not faulty.

Call AKAI and ask: repair cost for convergence fail (describe situation), and eventual conditions and availability of warranty extension, if available this will be cheaper than repair.

Call also a local technician and ask a quote for repair.

If you do not care about the risk of damaging your TV, you can buy the ICs and do it yourself, if you are not confident with this kind of repair there is a good chance that you cause more damage to the TV.

    Let me know.

Have you trying plugging it into different outlet...?

check all the possible loose connection..

if all of this was corrected, you will need someone to check the possible faulty or problem inside the tv.

I stumbled across a tutorial on fixing the convergence for my Sony KP-46WT510 a while ago, and now I can't find it again! Does anyone know where I can find that tutorial or one similar to it? We've been...

Here is a walk through on how to set your convergence.

A quick and easy way to try and let the TV realign the convergence try this...

1) Turn on the TV and tune to a channel and let it warm up for about a half an hour to let everything settle into its normal operating mode.

2) Press the Flash Focus button on the original TV remote. A cross pattern will show on the screen and the process is complete when the cross turns white and the TV returns to the program you were watching.

3) Do not press any other buttons until this process has completed.

If this does not adjust it enough you can adjust the convergence manually as follows:

1) Press the menu button on the original TV remote.

2) Use the arrow keys on the remote to highlight setup and press + button to select.

3) Use arrow keys to select convergence and press + button to select.

4) A pattern of white crosses appears, with a yellow [ ] around one of the
crosses. Aligned crosses (which do not need adjustment) look white and
have little or no red or blue showing. Crosses that are not aligned show
red or blue shades beyond their edges.

5) Use the arrow keys to move the [ ] to a cross that is not aligned. ***Note: start with crosses in the middle and work outward ****
*** TIP: Set the alignment while about 5 feet from TV for better results ****

6) Press the + button to select the cross and the [ ] will turn red indicating it is ready to adjust the Red convergence.

7) Use the arrow keys to move the red cross on top of the white one or at least as close as you can get it.

8) Once the Red is aligned press the + key again and the [ ] will turn blue. This indicates it is now ready to adjust the blue convergence.

9) Use the arrow keys to move the blue cross on top of the white one or at least as close as you can get it.

10) Once you have aligned the blue cross press the + button again and the [ ] should turn yellow.

11) Repeat steps 5 through 10 until all the crosses are aligned. To exit back to regular programming press the menu button on the remote.
